Confused by bidding history

I have just accessed the buying history on something I was unsuccessful in bidding for. I was suprised to see that at one stage three consecutive steps  were attributed to me. I expected my bids to go up only when someone else outbid me. How can this be?

I expected my bids to go up only when someone else outbid me.

As you were unsuccessful in winning, someone did bid against you. Possibly more than once, if their initial bid didn't beat yours.
