Claimed item faulty returned and found works perfectly

Hello.

Just wondered how some would proceed with this problem.

I sold a brand new sealed dvd and the buyer claimed when played it jumped around so i asked them to return it for a refund.

I said initially that it could be that they needed to run a dvd/cd player lens cleaner through their machine but despite this they insisted on returning the dvd.

They have sent it back and on testing it there is absolutely no problems with it in the slightest ! in fact because it is an old movie from the 1950s it is really good quality on the dvd.

Obviously its also going through mymind that they watched it ! didnt like it and decided to try for a refund.

Got 100 % feedback and am always straight  & fair with people but not sure how to deal with this one.

Had it been as they said jumping about all the time i would automatically refund and put it down to one of those things .

If buyer has opened a Not As Described Case, you would be wise to refund and not make a fuss. Ebay backs te buyer and if you don't refund then then will at your expense and you do not get a refund of the selling fee.

Buyer obviously changed their mind but you have NO RETURNS so they have to invent a reason for return that can be enforced.

A user friendly returns policy helps "Returns accepted within 14 days, buyer pays return postage". Buyers can then either not return, or pay the return postage without having to invent an  excuse. Doesn't prevent abuse of the system, but will reduce it.

but not sure how to deal with this one.

When a buyer returns an item as faulty, you don't have any choice.

If they open a case under eBay's money back guarantee, eBay's policy is to support the buyer unless they can determine that the item matched the description. As they never even see it, the outcome is a foregone conclusion. They will support the buyer. No evidence is required, and little weight will be attached to your side of the case.

Count yourself lucky. Firstly, the buyer returned the item at their own expense - eBay would have required them to send you a prepaid return label. Secondly, the item still works perfectly, so you can resell it. Many sellers have told us that items have been returned damaged, or even switched for another one, but eBay has still enforced a refund.

EBay has become a very risky place to sell things.

The click and collect is another matter entirely.  That is eBay's new process. I would never use click and collect [I am assuming sellers can decline to use it!]

I agree wholeheartedly with @john1297576 in that while private sellers are not required to accept returns it is wise to do so for the reasons stated.  EBay is surely not about "sell at all costs"
