Buying from aboard

I want to buy a" Buy it Now"shirt  in the USA were the seller does't give a shipping cost to the UK I have sent him an email requesting postage  but haven't heard back from him yet and in the meantime worried someone else will buy it. Can you tell me what will happen if I just press the Buy button 

without knowing the cost although I will not be able to pay until I hear from him

If the seller doesn't sell to the UK you shouldn't really buy it.   You might find you are blocked from doing so anyway.  Even if they do sell to you there may be import duty to pay on top of the higher postage.
