Buyer returned a different item

I recently sold a high value item but the buyer complained it was defective and I instigated a return and issued a refund immediately (I am too trustworthy).  But the item returned is not the one I sold.  He now has a working item plus a refund whilst I am out of pocket.  I have reported the problem to eBay but cannot see how I am going to get any further action.  Any suggestions?

By "issued a refund," do you mean that you personally sent them a refund, without asking them to open a case through the resolution centre?

If so, there's really nothing to be said that would help. EBay won't get involved unless the return was dealt with through the resolution centre.

If the buyer did follow one of eBay's return procedures, let us have more information and we can at least let you know where you stand if they returned a different item.
