1: Why do offers get blocked once a bid has been registered?

2. What is the approved way of responding to a request for a buy it now price when auction bids have been received? I have used a work around by terminating the auction and readvertising at a fixed price, cumbersome and time consuming but perhaps I'm missing a simple solution?

Because offers etc are void once a bid has been received as eBay expect sellers to honour auctions.

Either to ignore the offer or tell them to bid – a request for a BIN is no different to an offer.
