Buy it now or make an offer

If I list an item as " Buy it now or make an offer", can buyers still make an offer AFTER someone else has bid? Or does the item automatically become an auction once a BID is placed, with no "buy it now" option?

Why not list as an Auction with best offer. Frequently the offers made are ABOVE the start price. Offers on an Auction do not have to be below the start price, and you can set to automatically reject silly low offers. With a BIN no one will offer more than the BIN price as they could buy straight away.
