I have been given a 3 day ban for offering for sale an English silver and mother of pearl folding fruit knife. The person I spoke to at eBay to contest this was personable, sympathetic and intelligent but clearly she has to defend eBay's policies although I sensed that she was not totally convinced by them.
One of the things she said that eBay strive for is fairness and consistency. My list of "crimes" that led to this ban including the putting up for a sale a lighter in the form of a horse. I was astonished it was withdrawn, such an outcome never crossed my mind.
But back to the present.A folding fruit knife was an item that was used by "posh" families in the 19th century and early 20th century often on picnics and days out to peel fruit. It has a blunt blade. What is extraordinary is that there are currently 3,700 hunting knives being offered on eBay.Is it small wonder that I feel aggrieved ? A hunting knife could cause serious injury or worse, the only injury if the fruit knife was used on a person would be that the end would fall off.I completely understand why the selling of knives should be monitored, indeed there would be justification for a complete ban on anything that is or could be used as a weapon.but how can a small fruit knife be considered dangerous.
The argument about fairness is clearly lost. The system at eBay is random and confusing. How can they hide behind the excuse that they can not monitor everything.HOW CAN A SYSTEM THAT ALLOW CANTEENS OF CUTLERY WITH CARVING KNIVES AND 3,700 HUNTING KNIVES TO BE SOLD ON EBAY AND BANS A SMALL FOLD UP BLUNT FRUIT KNIFE BE FAIR.
