Re: Unclaimed Prizes - Charity Suggestions

Haven't read all the posts so sorry if this has already been suggested.

Although we associate Christmas with children - and we can never help every charity - please could some of the funds be donated to charities that supports the elderly and the homeless.

In effect - those who have nothing now or to look forward to and who are alone through no choice of their own.

All too often we forget those that gave life, or who have been denied a family or home for whatever reason.

Many children's charities are remembered at this time of year - those that support the elderly, infirm and homeless are often forgotten.

Re: Unclaimed Prizes - Charity Suggestions

My suggestion is for you to auction off the unwanted prizes then donate the money to charity saving the charity from using their resources and time in turning the gifts into cash. I thinkt he money should go to children's charities like childline etc.

The true meaning of christmas aside the festive season is all about children if u think about it.

Auction the unclaimed prizes off and give the money to charity - anyone agree?

Hope House Hospice in Oswestry/Near Wrexham. The work they do there is exceptional, helping terminally ill children and their families have an easier life. They truly need and deserve the money this Christmas.

Re: Unclaimed Prizes - Charity Suggestions

Definitely a children's charity.
Preferably UK.
Definitely covering the whole of the UK rather than London-based(or anywhere else based).
I work in a primary school with kids from a variety of backgrounds. I know from experience what it's like to watch a child die and to know that it really shouldn't happen.
However, it is also my experience that the children who suffer most are those that continue living and surviving and supporting each other in 'families' which, in theory, are intact but in practice are neglectful, cruel and abusive.
Based on the experiences of the children that I work with, I would like to recommend the following:
Women's refuges - to enable escape from abusive environments;
Mental health - particularly for children and adolescents (if only such support had existed when I was young);
Childliine - with expansion to local support and promotion of the type of circumstances which justify contacting childline (the most 'disadvantaged' and abused children that I know would not even think of contacting childline, as their self esteem has been eroded to such an extent that they would feel unworthy of the help offered. They accept their way of life as being 'normal').
Whichever charities end up being the 'lucky ones',
A big thank you to ebay for donating rather than pocketing the unclaimed prizes.
Happy Christmas folks,
Cider_sister

Re: Unclaimed Prizes - Charity Suggestions

There's always The National Deaf Children's Society where there's youngsters who are born deaf or have become deaf at young age and would love to have any unwanted prizes at their schools/clubs which may enable them to learn the words and understand them. I had been very lucky that i was never taught how to sign but learn to speak in the 70s and I'm also lucky that both my boys are not deaf from birth whereas I was.

There's another Deaf Society too but can't remember what it is - RNID (I think!) but the NDCS is the Children's one.

Re: Unclaimed Prizes - Charity Suggestions

As this was a Christmas treasure hunt shouldn't the money go to a charity that is *really* connected to Christmas: A.B.C.D.

Action around Bethlehem Children with Disability is a registered charity founded in 1985 (No. 327327), dedicated to improving the quality of life for those children with physical, mental and psychological disabilities in Palestine, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Re: Unclaimed Prizes - Charity Suggestions

i don't know any names, but charities that work with women's and childrens refuges. I know the giving tree was getting presents from people in our town for local refuges, found a link
http://www.mytwofrontteeth.org/?c=1002

i personally love http://www.toyboxcharity.org.uk/ who work with street kids.

but i agree, some money towards the elderly who're on their own at this time of year is also an important idea.

Re: Unclaimed Prizes - Charity Suggestions

UK ONLY organisations. I wouldnt like to see the prizes or proceeds go to a charity such as the band aid, red nose charities etc. Far too much of this money gets "LOST"

The NSPCC is a great charity, however although the NSPCC do a great job, some children arent lucky enough to be placed witha new family and have to be cared for in a home, these children become the responsibility of the local authorities home run many loving homes across the UK where the kids are cared for by staff that look after these kids like they are there own. However, these homes are not allowed to go asking for goodies for the kids as they are not registered charities. Its places like this I think that would benefit greatly, those that cant spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on Fancy Advertsiing campaigns!

Re: Unclaimed Prizes - Charity Suggestions

I know the consensus is for a childrens charity, but would really like to see something go to the less 'popular' charities. Cancer research, childrens charities and animal welfare already benefit from most charity donations.
I would really like to see the money going to help the aged or MIND.

Re: Unclaimed Prizes - Charity Suggestions

I think it's great that the prizes will be donated to charity and I also support the idea of supporting several charities with the emphasis on children and the homeless. My main suggestion is that I would rather see the smaller local charities get a look in rather than the bigger charities like the NSPCC. Nothing against the latter but all the big shops support one charity nationally and are no longer able to support the smaller local ones. Speaking as a fundraiser for a local charity (pregnancy crisis centre), it is very difficult to even get donations of prizes for raffles or quiz prizes. The local people are sympathetic but hands are tied by national managers supporting national causes. I would really like to see ebay supporting those smaller charities that do vital work (especially with sick children)but who don't usually get much publicity and therefore not so much funding.
