there are NO jobs

my next eldest left school last year at 18

has all his GCSE's

went onto tech from grammar...........hated his course........and left it 3 months shy of finishing (he bitterly regrets it now) but i couldnt sway him.

anyhoo

both of us have been on the gov.job.centre and even gumtree from he left.

and there is nothing...........he would take any job......but he doesn't even get responses

from applications he has made.

he does have an up to date C.V

i'm presently paying for his driving lessons......to at least give him an edge

it is so awful to see a young man...........so eager to work......and yet hasn't even got an interview

he went on the back to work scheme, signed up to have a 26 week placement........just a tad extra pennies over his jsa........and the lady who took the course told him it could be up to a year for them to find a placement.

he would ideally like to work in the care sector.........but he would do anything ...but this is knocking the stuffing out of him not being able to contribute to the house.

rant over:-(

I know Tara, morale for these youngsters is at it's lowest, they have so little in the way of good job opportunities 😞

I was just thinking, if he really wants to get into the care sector, perhaps he could do some voluntary work for a while?? Would give him experience, keep him occupied and would give him someone who would be able to write a good reference for him when he does apply for a job 🙂

Around here there are masses of care homes and care agencies  crying out for people,

Has he thought about being a carer and registering with an agency in your area once he passes his test?
However that is a very difficult job to do.

At my Mums carehome they take alot of young people, who are in walking distance, some are training on dementia courses.. They are the best people ever, so caring and full of life

streety  he knows how hard it is being a carer....... his cousin was doing it but couldn't cope with......... well people dying.

he is a big lad.........and is so gentle in every way towards his brothers....and takes mark, two years younger and has autism under his wing, making him do things for himself and pushing him to interact.

he is with every agency around............and still nothing.

he will be going back to school in september if he doesn't get something.

I agree,my 22year old left college aged 19,since then she has only been able to get two temporary christmas josb in retail, tis heart breaking for them, she has done voluntary work, job training courses, every day she is job chasing.we thought she got lucky a few weeks ago when the job centre sent her to a restaurant for an interview, she was offered the job but the owner said it would have to be off the books as he couldnt afford to pay her the full rate! This week she spent all day at a job presentation the next day she went for an interview and the interviewer said he only employed good looking people! i really feel for todays youth.

If he can get some voluntary work that will look good on his CV.  There are a lot of employers who are more interested in work whether voluntary or paid on a cv than qualifications.

I'm still out of work really too.. Only manged to secure a small job at a private school, but have to still search for at least 15 jobs a week to receive £40 a week from JSA.. Fair enough, however I'm past the 3 month mark of claiming and now I'm being passed on to someone else.  I just hope this person is older as the idiot I've been under was barely out of nappies and had no idea how hard it was to be like me.

I search and search, never give up but things like caring are unsocial hrs and with my only source of childcare being in a home herself, I've no chance

tara also he may be wise to pay for (or his mum) a CRB check so he can put this on his cv so when he contacts care homes ect they will now he is serious .

Cookie, it makes no difference at all.  I have masses, but every company will still want to do their own before they employ someone

well moosie, ya did it again, you took my suggestion out of me brain!! I was going to type the same thing.

Nothing changes though, in the 80's I was unemployed for a while. I know that being a big gal, I was passed over in interviews because I didn't look the part, I had a good CV and could write a good letter and always got an interview but it never panned out.

I was told being in my 30's that I was too old for a receptionists job!!!!:O

I know now that they don't even get replies to their applications which is such a demoralizing thing.

I wish everyone who is job searching the very best of luck, stick with it....someday soon eh?:-x

My eldest son was in the same situation. He's the most lovely person you could imagine, even as a biased mum, but there were literally no jobs here. He was lucky enough to get a plumbing apprentice position with a local company by researching the fact that they can claim back most of his wages so they basically get free labour. He only got £2.60 an hour for the first year but now (this month ) it goes up to minimum wage because he is over 19. He has done the two year apprenticeship on a fast track scheme so is doing his final basic plumbing exams now. He will stay on and do more advanced stuff next year, at the moment he can do taps, loos, rads etc. after that he will go on to do the gas side of it.

Eventually he will be able to earn a decent wage. He has had to survive on the £2.60 wage though and yes I do charge him rent at £85 a month! He was lucky enough to be given a two year old car for his 21st by his grandma and she pays his insurance but he does manage on the money and even saves.

It must be hard enough looking for something and the effort that entails, without the added burden of often bad press, when many young people ( and not quite so young ) just want to get on with their life.

There are a number of training providers still who I have seen offering NVQ type care assistant training course which given his age and circumstances should be free, but I don't know which area you are in, or if there are similar. Obviously some colleges do, and if he's receptive I suggest that the more qualifications he can do the better his chances are, and it will also tend to make him feel he is getting somewhere, and provide a bit of a lift as others will be in the same boat. They may also be able to help with contacts. A short stint as a voluntary for say a day a week might just lead to something, but choose wisely as some are just out for free help.

I am still a bit shocked to read that someone has been told they didn't look right as a reason for rejection. If it's any consolation they weren't the right employers.

Lastly, and hardest, keep plugging away, something will turn up. Best of luck to all.

Tara, don't know if this is any use to you but, regarding the food hygiene courses. Many colleges run them in their local community centres and for unwaged/ancient etc they are free.

I believe that they are run a couple of times a year. Anyone of any age can take the courses and they are usually 5/6 weeks long, once a week for 2 hours.  Ours also do first aid......painting, drawing, archeology. genealogy, cake icing, flower arranging, jewellery making and loads of others, all run on the same terms.
