do you pierce them first.

You don't need to, but it makes them easier to peel. I cut a line right down one side. It's easier to peel them when they are still hot, once cold they're a b*gger!!

I used to love roast chestnuts...
till I found a wormie thing in one ...
& it was still alive !
A roast chestnut has never passed my lips since

There's only one thing worse than finding a wormy thing in any kind of fruit, veg or nut, and that's finding only HALF a worm!!!
If you stop eating every kind of veg you find an insect in, you'll die of starvation.

I usually roast my chestnuts, put a small slit in the flat side just so they are easier to peel, but I believe you can boil them. Not sure about microwave would they not explode?
Sadly they don't always get to the table as I tend to eat them before they get there.

I did microwave them once, I put them in a dish and did them for 3 minutes.
they went on fire, stuck to the dish and even burnt through the glaze, that dish had a black mark in the bottom for ever!!!!!
wouldn't advise you nuke them....
nothing tastes as good as doing them in the ash pan on a coal fire though.
