having a discussion here about how to say a few words and why an 'r' seems to have snuck into

the way  castle and glasgow are pronounced by tv people

the CWG had me annoyed by all the bbc people

so  how do YOU  say castle?

It seems to be fashionable to choose people to present tv who have regional accents, whereas

years ago you had to have a "clear home counties accent" if you wanted to work on tv.  Nothing against

the accents but they seem to have gone completely the other way now.

There was a phase round here (Essex) of pronouncing "th" as "f", for instance "I thought" as "I fought" (I

was tempted to say who did you fight with?).

Upminster is often pronounced Upminister.

Then there's the chavvy speak we hear so often round here (or should that be "Raaand ere") - that's not

regional in accent or pronounciation, it's just people speaking extremely badly and their children are doing

the same 'cos parents can't be bothered to teach them to speak properly.  In the market, the traders yell

"paaaaaand a paaaand" in your ear all the time.

I think a lot of it is because some people don't bother to read anymore, they just hear how people around them

say things and do the same.

I love different accents on people,, i have a real Kentish accent i think and i only really can hear it myself when i listen to my voice on a recorded tape. Its funny how your own voice sounds different when you hear it played back!!.

Apparently, in a town in the middle of England, the 'f' for a 'th' is alive and increasing to the point where one set of parents have named their DD Samamfa - or it may have been Samamfer.

Oh yes, that "noy" instead of "now" thing really gets my goat.  I'm sure some of them are doing it

just for attention or something.

Place names are weird though, I often wonder whether, if they wanted it pronounced a certain way,

why they didn't spell it that way to start with!  I know place names date back many centuries and

pronounciation has evolved through changes in our language over that time, but, honestly, some

of them aren't pronounced anything like the way they're spelt!

Mousehole is "Mowzel" in Cornwall

Teignmouth in Devon is pronounced "Tinmouth", yet it's on the river Teign which is pronounced Teen"!

My brother in law and his family live in Shrewsbury and pronounce it Shrewsbury as in the little animal.

He says it's a mystery where the pronounciation "Shrowsbury" came from, again just some daft person

deciding that's how they'd say it, he says it's a posh person thing too.

I have a scouse/northern/Welsh lilt/certain posh bits accent....I pick up on accents real quick and it all gets mushed up....

well I am a coo how do ya expect me to talk....moovelously!!

my mother would always correct me if I talked too "common" as she put it, she hated the thick Liverpool accent and I agree with her.

I speak with a northern accent (I'm from St Helens) but my nextdoor neighbour talks with a really broad accent and he was from another part of town.  It surprising how many northern accents there are in the town where I come from and they all come from the same town.
