nice little tale

just thought I'd share this - we have been feeding a young stray cat for severaL weeks, we live in an isolated rural area so can only think that either it is a wild born cat, or someone has dumped him (that's how I acquired my rabbit, a white one). Poor thing was terrified of us and was living on whatever he could catch around the garden, plenty of mice etc. in the summer but I was getting worried about how it would manage in the winter. Anyway we have been feeding it twice a day and have managed to worm it with some granules added to the food, and it is now looking in good condition. Today, looked out of the window and there was puss cat sitting on the doorstep waiting for some food! We still can't get near enough to touch it, but progress is certainly being made! If we ever manage to handle it I will have it spayed/neutered but that will be way in the future but in the meantime it looks as if we have been adopted. Don't know if it is male or female so we are calling it PussPuss at the moment.

It may be that it will never become a house pet ...it may remain feral ...or it may become more domesticated over time .

It will take a lot of love and perseverance but you are already making progress ....its a very lucky cat to have found you ...

My friend is feeding a feral cat that lives under her summerhouse. She has put a blanket under there & like you has managed to give it worming stuff. She doesn't want to encourage it in but is making sure it's fed & warm.

There is a home here for it any time it wants it, as much or as little as it wants to accept, I keep reminding myself that it is not our cat and may find its way back to where it came from, although with no close neighbours it must have travelled quite a way. Trouble is that if it doesn't appear on time I start worrying about it and have no idea where to start looking but guess it must be pretty good at looking after itself by now. I have made it a little bed in the garage but it prefers to sleep in the chicken coop (unused one), but as it seems to get on fairly well with my cat Coco I hope it will eventually come into the house.

Just a quick update, I can now get to within about 2 feet of the cat and it sits outside waiting for food when I get up and again in the evening. He (I think) has developed a taste for evaporated milk and tinned tuna but will also make do with cooked chicken or cooked white fish, and as a real last resort will eat cat food!! He has set up home in a disused chicken coop and seems quite comfortable in there with plenty of hay. When I shout Puss Puss he comes to see what I want, just not too close, so I think we are making progress.

aawww that's nice, I'm sure he'll soon be coming for a cuddle.

Himself always liked tuna and evap too.....bless him. I never was one for cats much, but when we got "adopted" by the cat down the road, it made me see them in a different light. He came and lived with us for 5yrs in the end!!!

Evaporated milk is scrummy for cats. My old **bleep** Nicky had that from when she was little mixed with water. It will come closer with time,, you will see!!!!.

Ahh, that's really nice, how lovely to hear something so nice.

I am sure your little friend will gain more confidence and will eventually come

into your home and up to you to be fussed.  It can take what seems like an

age though and they have to feel happy with what's happened so far, once

they feel secure progress is definately being made.  It sounds as if Puss Puss

feels very happy with what you've done for him so far - thank goodness for nice

people like you.

thank you all for the kind words, but I don't think I am particularly kind, just seem to take in all the waifs and strays - the rabbit (white one) was bouncing down the lane outside the house last year, we still have him. Last weekend someone came to the door with 2 stray hens he had found wandering in the local town so I have them as well, Pusspuss just decided that he would live here! With 2 rescue Newfi's and a cat of my own plus chickens and ducks (and 1 guinea fowl) my food bill is getting out of hand now. I have said definitely no more animals - but watch this space!

Ahh, but that IS kind, taking in all the little waifs and giving them

love, food and security.  I think cats in particular always seem to

just know where to turn up and be accepted, it's no doubt true

of other animals too.
