He set the bar high as an example of how forgiveness and reconciliation can happen on a massive scale.
I hope his message/s reach leaders of all the world's countries where there are conflicts and they'll be reminded of his words and actions as an example of how it's possible to move forward peacefully.
I visited Robben Island ( a 30 minute hovercraft ride from Cape town) about 6 years ago and saw the prison and the very small - about 7' x 7' - room that he lived in for 27 years, it overlooked a concrete courtyard with other cells looking out on to it as well. Most of the other buildings have just collapsed over time so I didn't get to see where he had his garden. There are still a few very old ex political prisoners who live on the Island who now live in the houses inhabited by the guards, and who now work as guides. It's a pretty desolate place plonked in the Atlantic Ocean, with just a few seals and seagulls for company.

Very sad news...but not really unexpected. He lived longer than I thought he would after being admitted to hospital in July.
His daughter was only speaking of him yesterday morning on Daybreak so even more difficult for her as she was thousands of miles away from him.
Apparently his funeral is going to be on a par with Winston Churchill - he was that influential across the world.
RIP and my heart goes out to all his family
