house building

would you build your own? OH watches them and as nice as they are when they're finished, no way would I try to do that. OH would have a heart attack with the stress for sure!

these programme makers seem to make it sound easy but no one manages to build one for under half a million!!!!!

Watching one of the programmes now. They all seem to have a never ending pot of money

I don't think that I'd fancy building my own house.  I'm perfectly happy living where I do in a house that we bought nearly 13 years ago.  The bungalow nextdoor to me has just sold for double what we paid for ours all those years ago.

Would love to do it on the land we have if only we had the money ............................................ not sure I could live in a caravan for 18 months or so while it happened though and would need a really great project manager as the stress would finish us 2 off

No......mainly because I like period houses ...

Favourite is victorian / edwardian although our present home is older ( 250 yrs old ...georgian ) .

Would really like to have another house with high ceilings and old fireplaces although they are expensive to maintain......

We do need to downsize at some point ...heart says old ..head says new but definitely not a self build ...far too scary ...

Our son built ours.  It was built behind the original one so we were able to stay where we were the whole time.  Apart from making 20 cups of tea and coffee three times a day for months on end there was nothing to it.  In fact it was fascinating, watching what was going on every day.

He's now started  doing the same for our daughter, but she'll have to move out at some point.  He's building a triple garage with accomodation above first so they might move in there.

He rents his place!!  Woman LOL

We used to live in an apartment in a grade 2 listed building which was built in 1812.  In fact, this is where we used to live:

I hope that the link works.  In one of the apartments, there was a fireplace that was put in when the house was originally built.  All of the rooms in our apartment had high ceilings.  The reason we moved was that we could never get out for one thing when the weather was bad.  It never really felt like home.

Looks lovely .....

The only thing that really puts me off a place like that is the maintenance charges ( and the management companies ) .

We bought a modern apartment a little while ago as hubby was on a secondment down south and we needed somewhere to live during the week . The apartment was lovely ( and so cheap to run , being new and fuel efficient ) but did not like the way the management company approached things . We always paid up immediately but the invoices always seemed threatening .

There are a few gentlemens residences divided up into apartments near to where we eventually hope to downsize and they are tempting ...but probably not for us .

A nice little victorian / edwardian place in a market town ....sounds blissful to me ...

The charges we had to pay had to be done by direct debit.  Apartmennt living wasn't really for us either.  We are much happier living in our little bungalow.
