captain, maybe try geraniums as certain varieties are good ground cover - see below. I planted some small cuttings of "Czakor" and they went Whooosh! :^O
As a rule, geranium foliage is not noted for being aromatic. However, the wonderful evergreen G. macrorrhizum is the exception producing delicious, lemony aromatic leaves – which turn shades of ...'Album' (white), , 'Czakor' (magenta) and 'Spessart' (white).

Poached egg [ also called scrambled egg.]
Self seeding, Shallow roots so easy to weed out / contain to areas.
It's a green manure so also good for the soil.
Usually yellow and white.....hence the name but also available as a white variety.
Or woodruff .
Both grow well on my allotment which is semi shaded and clay.

I`ve trimmed mine back as it grows against a wall and got too large but I have a self set in a plant pot which is becoming a natural bonsai..........the leaves being half size. I understand I can reduce the size further by cutting them in half with scissors. (and they come even smaller next year ).........has anyone else heard of this ?

Campanula? Grows like a weed here.
Isn't that just another name for 'Canterbury Bell'.?
Surely that wouldn't be considered ground cover.?

Different plants Wilson. My Campanula is definitely ground cover, it covers everything!
