York

I have a couple of days in York at the end of the month and never having been there before I wondered if any of you have any tips for things to do, places to see.

Smiley HappyYork is a beautiful place, I never tire of going there & luckily I am only am hours drive away, there is a park & ride service so you don't need to drive into the city but as the OP has already said, she isn't driving there so it doesn't matter. Parking is expensive but probably no more than in any other big city.
I have never ever had to pay to go in York Minster & there are loads of other places of interest to see, I can still spend an entire day just walking around or down by the river if the weather is nice

£8 each for a 'normal' meal seems very reasonable to me,even 5 years ago, but in Cornwall everything is expensive so I guess we get used to paying more.

In Reading 15 years or more ago parking for the whole day was £7, so I guess we all have an idea of what is reasonable and what isn't, as a atheist Churches and Cathedrals don't interest me other than architecturally,  and there are many interesting buildings that you don't have to pay to go in to.

If I am going somewhere new I'm intending to enjoy myself and not spoil it by grumbling about the cost of everything, if I didn't want to spend any money I'd never go anywhere, just  I stay at home - but where is the fun in that?

The Shambles, walking the wall and just wandering seem to be good ideas.

Thanks all.

Well said Chips, holidays or breaks are all about having  good time, I have to remind my OH about that when we go camping and he wants to cook our food in our tent rather than having meals out, or should I say I cook the meals,  nope not any more, we have all the kit and I will do breakfast or a sandwich but won't do anything else.   That tends to be why we only go every few years, we save up untill we have enough money to cover everything, expensive meals out, rip off attractions, car parking etc.  We just go with the flow.  We don't go abroad because there are so manywonderfull places to visit here.  I did all my globe trotting  when I was young.

Our favourites are, Cornwall, Dorset, Wales and Warwickshire and Worcestershire.  Next one a bit further afield I think.

Have a fab time Chips.

You're right in some respects but not all.  £8.00 a head was a fair bit of money five years ago but it's a hellova lot when you're the only one working so Dad pays for everything.  You look at the price and multiply by three - that's just for one meal.  It soon mounts up! I'm no skin flint but after four days you're beginning to wonder whether your overdraft limit is going to stretch that far.  I could have had a fortnight in Ibiza for that amount.  The only way to manage is to go self-catering.  Now I'm retire it is a total 100% impossibility.  I'll happily spend money - but wasting it is a different matter.  The only way it could be done again is if everybody goes Dutch.

York car boot sale at the racecourse on a Saturday is well worth a visit. It is has a bit of an upper class boot sale / cheap antique fair feel to it. It is really busy and always has interesting stuff at it. We go a few times a year to get rid of the bits not quite good enough for the website / toy fairs. We are going tomorrow , cant wait!

Flipping heck Frederick, you are a professor of doom sometimes!

Try going to London, York is no worse than there, or any other touristy place.  It might

seem a lot, it is, but the attractions have bills to pay too and somebody has to pay them,

I think you will find the attractions there are charging admissions more or less in line

with similar elsewhere.

As for Houses of God, again they have massive bills to pay to keep themselves open

to all the tourists that troop through, themselves bringing problems such as wear and tear

and sometimes, sadly, vandalism and other damage.  Perhaps it's only fair that these people

should donate something, every little helps.

There is plenty to do in York just mooching about by the river, castle, shops, whatever takes

your fancy without going in the touristy things that make a visit expensive.  I've always managed

to spend a day there ehen I've been, without spending much, ok, maybe a little in the shops

and something to eat.  But then you have to have some fun when you're on a day out!!

lol. Poor Fred you are getting an ear bashing! But the other poster is right , many things in Yorkshire are free the scenery alone is worth going for, but beware the Yorkshire people are very blunt & honest but if you take the time to get to know them they are the kindest people around, actually you would get on with them well, but be prepared for a really good debate they don't suffer fools gladly & can be really cutting if you get on the wrong side of them. lol.

Awe, somebody likes me, then!  (Cuddles/blush).  I'm not quite as bad as I sound.  I just need to be buffed up with a bit of polish occasionally.  Smiley Happy

We need your wife to come on the board & give us a few tips Frederick.
I'll give you your dues though you own up when you think you've overstepped the mark.
You take all that's thrown at you with good humour.
You listen to others points of view & often change your mind in favour of it.
No you are OK in my estimation & you thought at the first F H G . Was tame eh! But you've stuck with it & taken the knocks, good on ya I say!!.
