What a difference.....

There's a song called "What a difference a day makes".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmBxVfQTuvI  Bits of it are currently being used in an advert.

With that in mind, what a difference a few years make? Some years back all the boards were buzzing on a Friday night. Look at how it is now?

Earlier this week, the FHG went three days without a post, astonishing?

Of course, the demise of the boards has been mentioned many times and all sorts of reasons have been put forward for it and often it's been said that it's the over-zealous moderation by those charged with keeping an eye on the boards.

That is quite true up to a point but, isn't it really the attitude of the posters? The idiotic over-zealous moderation didn't help but surely people should have taken more note of the board "requirements"?

In a way, it's a bit like some posh place having a strict dress code and some people turning up in jeans and tee shirts then complaining that they were asked to leave? It wasn't that they were banned altogether, they were just asked to conform. When they repeately turned up in Js & Ts, they would then be banned.

On the boards, people got a heavy-handed response to a minor "infringement" when really, a "quiet word" was all that was needed.

Seeing and reading about those "in charge" it was quite plain to see that they had little or no experience in people management skills and their heavy-handed approach was guaranteed to rub some up the wrong way and many spectacular flounces have occurred over the years as a result.

Anyone who's properly read the Board Usage Policy and the other oft-cited "rules" can see that literally anything can be construed as an infringement if someone so desires and that's happened many times over little or nothing sooooooo, isn't it time the whole thing needs some re-evaluation or is it far too late for that?

What killed this forum in one simple word is MODERATORS !

Let's say you have been away on holiday and came into the forum and did not see someone you were used to chatting with and asked about them, while you were away they had been banned unbeknown to you.

You got a slap.

Now let's say there was a thread started that provoked an adult discussion, there obviously would be differing opinions on certain things.

People got slaps.

This type of thing went on and on until more people got slapped and banned for trying to have adult discussions which is normal in life until eventually posters drifted away to places where they could discuss things in an adult fashion not like five year olds at primary school, yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir.

Yes there are rules made to be followed but not to the detriment of free speech and adult discussions.

So again I say MODERATORS killed this forum with their overzealousness and inability to recognise adult discussions and speech.

In answer to the last question ! Yes it is too late to rectify and this forum is now in its last throes and should be left to rest in peace with this inscription on its headstone,

 MODERATORS KILLED FH&G.

I pop in from time to time, but as most of the people I knew have gone over to fb, it's the only place to chat with them.

I would conform gladly if eveyone came back! but sadly I don't think that will happen.....

The thing is, if no-one posts there'll be nothing for you to read?

Why not post something to encourage others to read and post?

It's not just FHG that's in decline, is it? My impression is that all the boards are substantially quieter than they used to be.

Like you, CD, I read the usage policy document. That was some time ago and, to be honest, I found it so embarrassingly silly that I decided to rely henceforth on common sense and manners and reasoned judgement - at least, to the best of my ability.

I'm sure my memory is at least partially faulty, but I vaguely recall references to not discussing deleted posts or even board policy. I'm sure it wasn't that absurd, but it was something like that - all very much part of the "Monty Python meets Franz Kafka" that seems to crop up when organisations try to replace ability and competence with rules.

Some rules are, of course, useful and even necessary, but I think one needs to think carefully about the role of "rules."

Human beings are really pretty hopeless at making, much less administering, rules. This is a source of continuing relief (and presumably income) to, for instance, the legal and accounting professions.

Far from being weaknesses, loopholes become essential to allow capable people to circumvent inadequate, badly expressed or unreasonable rules. Without the flexibility introduced by loopholes, I suspect that most rule-based systems are at best inefficient and prone to generating problems, and at worst liable to crash completely.

Rules should be guides to help competent people to run things.

Douglas Bader put it pretty clearly (the exact quote varies slightly according to source, but the sentiment remains the same):

“Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men.”

(Full disclosure - I'm a bit of a by-the-book type by nature, and I was introduced to that saying by an exasperated simulator instructor when I showed a reluctance to depart from SOP - he was quite right, too.)

Rules are only as useful and effective as those tasked with their administration, and given the executive authority to interpret them and their intention, and even to ignore them when they prove inappropriate.

The moderators here show enthusiasm. Their failure in their duty to the boards seems to be the result of being obliged to stick slavishly to a set of rules, and were they given their heads, I suspect they'd do a pretty good job.

As it is, board members seem to increasingly roll their eyes at the latest "slap," exhortation to mark their problem as "solved" or whatever bit of rote-activity has got up their noses this time, and wander off elsewhere in search of meaningful and interesting discussion.

Frankly, anything other than personal attacks should be considered very carefully before it is deleted or sanctioned - and the odd argument might actually lead to increased understanding of matters under discussion. Deciding when an argument becomes an "interpersonal dispute" involves competence. Not rules. Sorry.

Do you think that social networks have also contributed to the decline of the eBay boards?

Not only do a lot of folk seem to expend their energy on FaceBook, Twitter and the like, but some also seem to have developed expectations and patterns of use probably more appropriate to those venues than this one.

Apart from horrors like posts opening with, "So," and like the use of "should of," "bored of" and the like, there seems to be an expectation of immediate response. This seems to result in opening posters becoming bored when nothing happens for an hour or so, and drifting off.

Perhaps the social networks also encourage the use of telegraphese instead of English, and in keeping ideas as simple and unchallenging as possible. I really don't know, and would be interested to hear what people who participate in social networking sites have to say.

I think CD's got it right, though. It's really up to us to keep on finding items of interest and posting on our favourite boards, and perhaps engaging with the moderators when we disagree with them rather than sneering or simply dismissing what they say or do. (I suppose that includes challenging any sanctions which seem irrational, irrespective of the "rules" - trouble is that most people are probably as lazy as I, and simply couldn't be bothered, choosing instead to simply sigh and move on.)

There's surely still hope - and it'll take effort and give-and-take from both contributors and moderators to revive things.

Oh, and less slavish reliance on The Rules.

Afternoon all.

It's good to see you back Kate.

I very often pop back in here to see if anyone has posted.  It's a pity we can't get FHG back to what it was.  I used to come on here every day regularly.  I used to really enjoy this board.

I just wish it could get back to something like it was but I don't somehow think it will.

Well folks, I seem to have provoked a little response?

As old hands will know, I've always been an RTer and only used to read FHG but I think the odd provocative thread often produces a bit of interest.

Note the word "provocative"? I meant that meaning provoking interest and encouraging responses. I didn't mean provoking people.

Doncha think it's a way of keeping a board alive? In the past, I think that some people just couldn't argue a point or take some critique without getting personal and abusive. I learned to debate at school and we were taught how to argue your corner in such a way that people could have opposing views without falling out and remaining friends so the same should be the way to go on here?

Surely there's enough going on in the World to have a discussion about?

Post, post, then post some more eh?

Thank you for an interesting post, I agree with much of what has been said.  I could never understand, for instance,  why we were not allowed to refer to a female dog by her usual name - it isn't a rude word!  Sadly, common sense is not common.  People have drifted away for various reasons, and I don't think the boards are very easy for a newcomer to find.

Hello Kate, I'm sorry for your loss, good to hear from you though .Best wishes to all.
