Just back from doing the weekly shop. I made my list last night and did an approximate calculation on each item - and guess what - I was just 11p out on what I spent to what I calculated. I am very pleased with myself today.

Very good. I couldn't tell you even an aproximate cost of anything I buy. I think bread is sometimes on offer for £1 and I think a jar of coffee is £4.99. That's it I'm afraid!

LOL Millie....I have to make a list and stick to it as I have no extra monies for niceties and luxuries at the moment. My huge problem at the moment is my local LIDL is shut for six weeks on its facelift so having to shop elsewhere.

I send "him indoors" out with a list every week, but I have no idea what anything costs. I don't even have any idea of what we actually have in the cupboards.
To be fair, it is difficult for him to plan meals, as I never know what I will fancy eating.

I have a real good idea what things costs especially if they are a regular purchase - otherwise I just go online to check out the rough costs of things which is how I managed to get my shopping to within 11p of my first calculation. I am a very savvy shopper!!!! The reduced section is always my first port of call. Being made redundant a while back I have had to be very careful about my purchases and to be honest it gives me so much pleasure to buy for very little and actually see what the end result is. I can often get a meal for me and the boy for under £1

Sounds like they are going to stop the riddiculous Bogoffs on salad, this has been going on for years, in our store they reduce everything late at night and we have a regular lot of customers who always come in at that time, and crowd around the girls reducing the foodstuffs, so we don't have a lot to throw away. Unfortunately some of the fresh things with useby dates cannot be sold after the date due to worrys over food poisening, we used to give ours to the local zoo and pig farmers, but there was so much legislation and paperwork that it was easier to throw it away. It is a shame because there are a lot of people who would be glad of it. I quite often buy the reduced in store bakery bread to use for bread and butter pudding and breadcrumbs its better if its stale.
When my husband was laid off years ago and my son was a baby we had to watch every penny and I became very savvy about buying groceries and even now when we are both working I still plan ahead and have a full store cupboard and freezers. We could probably manage for a month on what I have, apart from the usual fresh stuff.
We are at the moment eating out of the freezer, in readiness for christmas stock up time. We have had some lovely meals and I quite often make extra to freeze for the boys to have when I am out.

Yes I quite agree, we tried making less to try and stop waste, and we had so many complaints from customers because there wasn't so much choice and we were running out before the end of the night, we had to increase the amount we made, however I think we have reached a happy medium and very rarely throw any away. A few years ago it used to be bags and bags of the stuff in the skip, it was criminal.
