Are you starting to sew right away or are you winding the big handwheel on the right until the lower thread pops up next to the foot? (not good at explaining LOL)

So you are up to page 12 on the manual then you start sewing and it goes wrong?

Are you able to freely pull the top and bottom threads though to the back with your hand without it sticking?

Are you still trying to sew the t shirt fabric? Are you sure the top is threaded properly too?

Indeed it is.:-D I wonder if the bobbin is wound evenly too?

My mum used to have a machine with a bobbin holder. If I remember right, if the thread is threaded into it correctly, you should be able to hold the bobbin holder in your hand with the folding lever pulled outwards and the thread can be pulled through it freely without sticking or the bobbin jumping out.

OH has just had a look and says the tension control isn't working.

He is taking the front off now, back in a mo.

If it's sewing fine on cotton, you might need a slightly heavier needle for the cotton jersey. They only usually give you an assortment of common sizes when you get a machine. The needles are numbered and sometimes colour coded.

There are special needles for things like leather, heavy denim and even ball point ones for stretchy synthetic fabrics so it doesn't split the yarn. The lighter the fabric, the smaller the needle generally.

The needles can go blunt, which can affect the stitch quality and you are supposed to use a new needle when you start a project. I tend to use one needle for general purpose, quick stitching up etc and then use a new one if its something special.

Yep - tension control not working - no resistance no matter what setting.

OH is trying to get to it now.

It was sewing OK on the cotton, but I only tested for about 6 inches.

No tension on top means that bottom thread is going slack and looping around the spindle that holds the shuttle case

Does that mean it will have to go to a shop to get fixed?

Well - still only sews for about 6 inches, then the bottom thread goes grey with oil off the spindle, then all loops.

Does tension on bottom thread need adjusting? Looser or tighter?

Have you checked your bobbin tension using the fall dowen test on page 15?
