I just had someone shut my boiler in my kitchen down and am starting to get really upset and uptight. they said it was giving a high CO reading which is Carbon Monoxide im guessing?? but he said it was going out the flue outside but there could be a breakage in the pipe or something. He told me it could not get back in the flat as the flue goes outside for safety but if windows were open it could have been coming back in through there. Is this bad, should i pursue anything about this. They are sending someone straight away to fix it but im so annoyed from safety point of view. The machine had to be on a long time when he was testing to get the reading so im presuming the person who came before did not have it going long enough to record the proper readings. Any advice of what i can do or am i panicking??. The boiler has been shut down for the time being.

I am grateful and it is still shut down, it needs parts and they are coming again. I was told it would not have hurt me as its all contained whatever is wrong and it would come in only when windows where open and maybe it would blow in. im going to get a detector fitted right away and was only angry as i thought the man who came to doyear check did not do it properly. the machine i was told took a time to register that there was anything wrong so maybe it was done at the correct amount of time but not enough if you know what i mean. I have just been told the boiler is all contained with no open flue so all is well.

we have carbon monoxide alarms upstairs at the boiler and downstairs in the kitchen
they came as a pair, its something i was concerned about too

Yes there is no alarm, i live in council flat but i am responsible for fitting one and i will be getting one. I think its bad they do not fit these themselves in council places though as a matter of routine and for utmost safety. Its very bad i think.

All council houses are fitted with carbon monoxide alarms as well as smoke alarms as standard here , they also service them yearly.

can i ask whether the wind is blowing in a stranger direction than normal?
that can affect a reading a little, are any of your airvents blocked? either by plants outside or furniture inside?
hope they sort it soon,
do you have someone calling daily?

Personally I would be very grateful, rather than angry if someone had potentially saved my life!
Try living in your own property, not only would you have to pay for smoke alarms, Carbon Monoxide alarms, but someone to service the boiler and replace when necessary.
If we can't afford it we have to go without - I had to go without hot water and heating for months in the winter because I couldn't afford a new boiler immediatey.
Stop moaning and get a grip.

the damage to the pipe could have been done at anytime presumably
so its lucky they came when they did, that is what i would be focusing on
it always pays to be vigilant, so take this time to get a detector, they are around £20, freely available and its money well spent for peace of mind
its colorless, odorless, and a tasteless gas, the silent killer
you have to take heart it was detected, not be angry

I AM ACTUALLY GRATEFUL TO THE MAN WHO CAME LAST NIGHT BUT NOT TO THE FIRST ONE WHO DID NOT MAKE A PROPER JOB OF TESTING I DONT THINK.
I WAS ACTUALLY QUITE REASONABLY UPSET WHICH I AM ALLOWED TO BE I THINK.

Annoying yes, but better to put up with something slightly annoying than to be found dead some day.
We had this a couple of years ago, the service people condemmed all our gas appliances which
consisted of cooker, gas fire & boiler, until they'd worked our why they were getting such a high
carbon monoxide reading on their routine service. Turned out, after having had half the floor up,
that we had a faulty pipe under the floor, with a miniscule little crack at the join. He said it was
insignificant at that time but would without doubt have got worse and, if left untreated, caused
illness or worse to us and probably death to our cats.
We were without gas for two weeks which was blooming inconvenient to say the least, but not
the teeniest fraction as inconvenient as being dead.
Like Chips and many others, our home, we had to pay.

Same happened to us, condemmed gas cooker and gas fire, had to save up to buy new ones, we had no central heating either as the gas fire was the only thing we had to warm house. We bought the cooker first and made do with electric heaters until we could afford the new fire. When we moved into our new house the first thing we did was get boiler insurance, so unless it is totaly dead we don't have to pay for anything. It is a scary thing but better alive than dead and at least the council would buy you new if anything goes wrong, it cost us the better part of a grand for the two items, god knows how much a new boiler would be. At least you found out sooner rather than later and you didn't have to pay anything either.

It makes you wish you were on benifits sometimes! When my boiler packs up I won't be able to afford a replacement.

ITS BOILER PARTS ARE COMING AND BEING DONE TOMORROW, I HAVE SOUGHT ADVICE AND BEEN TOLD THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A SMALL RISK. I HAVE ALSO ARRANGED FOR A CO DETECTOR ASAP AS I HAVE TO DO THIS MYSELF SEEING AS THOUGH MY BOILER IS NOT AN OPEN FLUE ONE. IM MORE AT EASE NOW BUT PEOPLE BEWARE ITS AN IMPORTANT SUBJECT. THANKS FOR KIND ADVICE.

Tell me about it!
I just think if for a couple of months I didn't have to pay the huge tax and NI amount on my salary I could afford to pay for things that if I was on benefits I'd get for free.
