Signature files and Animated Gifs

Good Morning,

I am afraid to say that we have arrived at a post I had hoped I would not have to make 😞 I will be posting this message across most of the main boards throughout the day.

The size of Signature Files in posts is starting to get a little too out of hand. Lately the size has been creeping up and in some cases there are two or three different things in sig files pushing out the size of posts. In addition the use of animated gifs has been creeping back in along with ad's for sales and attempts to hide links in text.

For the most part I've tried to be as flexible as possible, overlooking the ones that are a little bigger than the recommendations. When they have been too large I've contacted members directly to ask them to resize them, and members have been happy to comply. This is no longer an option as it is taking up too much time due to the number of people needing to be contacted.

Were these reported Liveworld will act on them, and I don't want to see anyone getting a warning over something easily avoided.

At this point I would like to remind everyone about the signature guidelines, which you can find here: http://forums.ebay.co.uk/thread.jspa?threadID=400055459&tstart=0

I hope we can work within these guidelines and bring the threads back to a point where posts are easy to read without too much scrolling.

I appreciate your help on this.

James

A while back I was castigated by some pratt who could only say 'your sig is non-compliant'. I was under the impression that 200x50 pixies was the maximum.

Now thanks to lightbluetouchpaperandretire posting his chart I checked the Official Document and found that it is indeed 220x50pixies Many thanks for this enlightenment.

I have printed this chart for future reference, it saves finding a calculator.

cornish pastie what are you worried about a rigght click says yours is 89x49!

"All images found in a signature may not exceed a total area of 50 pixels by 220 pixels."

If you accept that statement literally, knitting, then your sig (at 100 X 75 pixels) is non-compliant because the first figure is twice as large as it should be! However, at 7,500 total pixels, it's well withing the maximum of 11,000 allowed.

I believe these rules were put in place to conserve the integrity of eBay's available bandwidth for these boards. Consequently, it makes no difference how the maximum pixel size is achieved.

its the height that more of a bother

and if you have a siggy that has a largish box around it try to crop the box instead of making the whole thing smaller first

i liked what you said Gothic

the problem with liveworld is that they are american and we dont exactley know how much thry are paid for their `services` their ideas of moderation are too slow and seemingly idiotic

and what is REALLY NEEDED is a UK Pink that can understand OUR problems and be seen to deal with them quickly and efficiently, an `on-call` email/telephone alert for times when there are trolls about.

i understand atm they aren`t paid for working the forums which ias a real shame

50 high or wide, 220 high or wide it all depends on which way round it is?

11,000 square pixies is area 50x220 pixies is an actual size.

Read in C Q&A

The goal is called out in the OP, to reduce unnecessary scrolling and taller ones cause that more than wide ones.

Why could they not have said that in the first place? :_|

Is it so difficult to say 'Sigs must not be more than 50 pixies high to make scrolling easier.' DOH!

Talk English Ebay!

#308: I did post and I did pin a thread on the issue. It was later self reported by the OP as they felt it was drawing attention to the issue (if I remember right).

I work every day to investigate previously sanctioned members, establish links and both have them banned from the boards and suspend the eBay accounts in question. This maybe why you see trouble posters constantly needing to create new accounts. We are working on other ways to address this and that's all I have to say on that topic as too much detail would only serve to undermine the purpose.

*waves to gothic*

I'm willing to discuss create a single thread that can be used for the creation of and sharing of elaborate sigs. However, this would be the only place to have them and not in main board posting sig spaces.

How's that?

James

Hello James that sounds like fun.

There are a lot of very creative people around who could express themselves in an artistic way without spoiling the flow of a thread.

Now all you have to do is convince everybody. 😮
