Has anybody out there in FHG land ever had a letter from HMRC saying that they have been overpaid regarding child tax credit.
I ask because I have had correspondence from them saying they overpaid me for the period of 2007/2008 - but all I have received are letters and NOT any proof of any such overpayment.
If anybody has had such "threats" from the HMRC I would love to chat to you about how you sorted it out. I would prefer not to discuss the in's and out's of the matter on a public forum so if anybody has any information that is "sensitive" please inbox me so we can chat about it. General information I dont mind on this post.
Any help would be much appreciated as I have had a couple of sleepless nights over this. I have written to them (via RD) requesting PROOF but they keep ignoring my requests. If necessary a visit to CAB is on the cards.
Thanks for any input.
Jane 🙂

I did and just completely ignored them.....
however, what they did the last time it happened was.... not pay me for a few weeks ,,, i just dont understand how, if you give them all the correct info, and they have to work it out, how they can actually overpay?
when i remarried, it became such a small amount (relatively speaking)... that i just couldnt be bothered to go through the stress and aggro of it maybe happening again, i just didnt bother to claim...
It also happened when i went from being in a relationship, and claiming... to being single and claiming(years before the above)... a very nice person on the helpline told me that they wouldnt be able to pursue me for the overpayment as a single parent as it was a completely seperate claim(as a couple) from the claim i was getting at the time(as a single person).... and i heard no more!

Thanks Leo...I have replied to all their letters - even by RD so I have a paper trail and STILL they say I haven't replied LOL. Like you I have always updated them on any changes in my life. In my last letter I stated that unless they had ABSOLUTE PROOF IN BLACK AND WHITE that I wouldnt respond. It is their responsibility to prove to me that they have overpaid rather than the other way round. No good just sending a letter - that proves nothing. I think I shall just ignore them or just take the unopened letter to the CAB. They are claiming from over FIVE years ago.
I know I am not the only person to receive these letters....but sometimes it is hard not to take it personally.
I am still smiling though 🙂

Back in 2008, I was sent a letter saying we owed almost 1300 pounds. It was a shock to get this amd they wanted the money repaid within 4 weeks. I could not understand why we had been overpaid in the first place as my husband kept ringing them and they insisted it was right. I sent all letters by RD stating what they said on the telephone no answer never came to these.
Then after about 6 weeks another letter came with a working out but it was completely diff to the fiqures what we had has I used to keep all the paperwork from them.
My hubby phoned them again and they said we will sort out, another few pass and they send another letter saying we owe almost 2k.
I was at the end of my tether with and took it with the local MP ( who is very good in our area). He got it sorted out in 3 weeks and we did not owe them anything as they wiped the slate clean.
So try your local MP?????

If you have a letter of tax credits they can either take the whole amount or if you cant afford it you appeal and they will take smaller amounts weekly

When it first started we were over paid three years worth, we were told to keep it and they didn't give us anymore for three years it was only the lowest amount every month so not a fortune but enough for a holiday. I don't know if it still works the same or if they take it back.

Hi. I had a nasty letter saying I'd been overpaid after I started a different claim when I became a single parent. Knowing full well we'd previously only ever given the truth and accurate earnings. It peed me off, but it was only a small amount so I just paid it.
However I've had problems since then and in my experience letters do nothing, but phone calls with you recording them does! 🙂
