Open Luggage Racks on Aircraft ?

Times have changed...

Or is it a mistake by the TV company ?

I just watched an episode of the Police Drama  Special Branch

This episode is season 2 episode 2 from 1970 and they are on an airplane.

The luggage racks have no doors on they are just an open shelf like you would get on a train or long distance bus.

Were they ever realy open like that or did the TV company slip up?

Yes, they were open.  Just go to Google Images and type Boeing 707 interior.  Plenty of examples on the first few results.

I expect back then travellers had little hand luggage.....more likely it was just for coats etc as you could store handbags on the floor.

Times have certainly changed.....meals were provided and were not an optional extra...

It sounds dangerous.

I got bonked on the head by someones duty free booze collection once.

Although I have never encountered totaly open luggage racks on aircraft I do remember ones where they had a net that pulled across the shelf.

I flew on a DC-3 once ( 23rd September 1990 ) which had wicker seats, ribbed bare metal fuselage sides inside with no insulation or padding whatsoever, the windows were squares of perspex bolted on, the lighting system was bare tungsten bulbs run along the top of the cabin, bags were under your seat and the PA systm was a stewardess holding a megaphone.  The flight lasted 1h40.

Great fun.

I'd do it again if I could. Smiley Happy
