I suddenly catch myself recently using old sayings that my father used to use rather than my mother!!.
My dad used to say,,,,,,,,,"Steady On Barker!!!!!!!,,,,.
"Coooooor Lummy!!! was another although i think it was a rephrase on Corrr Blimey!!.
"Hang On The Bell Nellie" if i said HANG ON if he was walking too fast,, as i always said "Slow Down when i could not catch up. My dad was a fast walker and im told people called him The Greyhound!!!.
Has anyone else heard these before??. LOL, LOl,..
Or can you remember your family having any Sayings or Phrases?...

Ah, thanks for that, cookie - I hadn't thought of that: I knew about speaking to the organi grinder and not the monkey, but that makes perfect sense - thank you!
We also had no better than they ought to be, as well as the fur coat- and "all talk and no trousers" - but we didn't go round the Wrekin, just "round the houses" if we took a long time to get to the point.
I think cat in hell must come from the navy, as most of the cat-sayings do (like room to swing a cat, letting the cat out of the bag, etc).

My Mum and Gran used to say we were going all round the barleybush, but it usually referred
to the way to somewhere if someone wasn't going what she considered to be the quickest way.

When someone was showing off and boasting it was said they were "All mouth and no trousers".
It's life Jim, but not as WE know it.
Live long and prosper.

Im not being deliberatley rude but the clothes one previosly reminded me of Fur Coat and NO K******RS,,,whats that about?. I think i might know but will not say.
Stone the Crows. That is another.
We always used to say things and end up making funny rhymes with them. Like if i said Dan,, as in the name of someone, my dad used to pipe up" Dan Dan the Lavatory Man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.... LOL.
We used to do this quite a lot,,,actually my dad and me had a similar sense of humour.

My Grandad said "Dan, Dan, the dirty old man. Washed his face in a frying pan. Combed his hair with the leg of a chair.Dan, Dan, the dirty old man." lol
I think the Fur Coat & no Drawers was meant to mean someone putting on airs & graces & pretending they were better than they were.
