Oh dear, I've just realised I haven't made my Christmas cake !

I didn't make one last year because I made 2 the year before,  I have completely forgotten to do it this year, do you think it is too late or will it be OK if I make one this weekend and keep feeding it.   Personally I don't like it, but my men folk will go nuts if they haven't got one and the ones in the shops are really expensive and not quite like homemade.

I wouldnt know if it is too late to make it yourself. I was under the impression you should start in many months in advance to keep putting the brandy/rum into it on a regular basis. Unfortunately in this household we hate fruit cake of any sort so we wont be having either christmas cake or pudding.

In fact, when I got married I had a special sponge cake made for me and the bridesmaids...the guests had the fruit cake and myself and the girls gorged on the sponge cake instead.

If it was just me I wouldn't bother much prefer a sponge, but you know what men are like

I wouldn't say it's too late, I suppose that's because I don't 'feed' it.  It sounds disgusting.  I can't imagine eating soggy cake.   My mum used to make Christmas cakes and each year more and more people would ask her to make them one.  It got as high as 18.  She used to sit night after night picking the fruit over so not one pip got through into the cakes.  When they were all cooked she had to  marzipan then ice them.  She never soaked the cake though.  I do as she did which is to soak all the fruit in brandy for a few days before mixing the cake, then the fruit is plump and juicy and the cake is (not dry) but not soggy.

It isn't soggy. i just ise a cocktail stick to prick the bottom & drip some brandy in. It's moist but never soggy. I don't put much in now as the children like it & I don't want drunken grandchildren! lol

You know what I'm like Maggie, soggy cake or half cooked pastry on the bottom of a pie (YUKK!!!!!) is akin to thick liquids!! Woman Sad

It's not soggy though. It evaporates.

you've plenty of time left Ed, like grumpy says it's not the 24th yet. I shouldn't think that 5wks would be too short a time to make a boozy cake. will you show us the finished product, I like to see how peeps have decorated their cakes, you too Maggie.

Aw that's pretty twishy.  I was just thinking, I could make one, I hadn't thought about it.  Hubby likes fruit cake.  Thing is, I'd have to buy a big bottle of brandy and what on earth am I going to do with the three quarters of a bottle that's left over.   There are always problems aren't there.Woman Sad

What happened about the theft at swishy daughter's halloween party twishy?  Did it get resolved???
