Hi everyone
Does anyone know why it is impossible to get hold of magnesium sulphate paste ??
Have tried everywhere but noone has any.
Did find an online company but they are charging a fortune, it used to be under £1 a pot !!
Someone did suggest buying Epsom salts and making up a paste but it really does not work.
Oh well back to the needle !!!!

I bought some in a big Tesco's a while back for around £1.50, but I dont think they sell it anymore. I bought some for someone who had a splinter recently from a chemist and it was around £2.75. Used to be really cheap, mind you its so useful to have.

Epsom salt is magnesium sulphate so there is no reason why it shouldn't do whatever it's supposed to do.

As far as I know, a well known Chemist sells it, though whether they stock it in your local, I couldn't say
Hope you manage to find some

You are right Navydragoness, it does seem to have disappeared and I have no idea why.
The only thing I can think is that it contravened the legal uses of mag sulph as layed down by the Codex but that is pure conjecture.
Anyway, don't worry because you can make it yourself using epsom salts, but the crucial thing is to mix it to a paste with TCP not water as that will provide the phenol component found in commercial pastes. Hope that helps.
All the best 🙂

The probable reason for it's disapperance is lack of demand. There are fewer and fewer manufacturers of the unbranded medicines, and with the increasing amount of legislation affecting them, makes it financially impracticable. And if it is produced, it sits on the shelf and goes out of date! Bp formula has 0.49% phenol, but this is purely to act as a preservative. Some formulations also add some glycerol.
