I know I shouldn't laugh, but ....

Angus & Alfred

No, not my grandad and his mate..... our friends' newborn twins.

I feel a bit horrid laughing to myself at their name choices. Just like when my friend named her daughter Nancy.

I just think some names do not suit babies Woman Indifferent

ps -  they don't live in Scotland, where those names are probably very normal, they are Londoners.....

I know I shouldn't laugh, but ....

When I was in hospital after having my daughter, the lady in the bed opposite named her little girl Audrey.   I thought that was unusual.
I named my Son Joshua as at the time I didn't know of any.. Now they are everywhere

I know I shouldn't laugh, but ....

Just hope that some of the older names from the 1901 census don`t make a comeback

A few that come to mind are Fanny, Hezakiah, Gertie, Minnie and Bertha

I recently heard of a baby girl being named Edie. I know the more old fashioned names are making a re appearance, but I'm sorry, in my head I'm thinking but that's an old ladies name.

Fortunately I've not heard of any Ada's ................... yet Smiley LOL

Don't blame you being annoyed Stan.  Come 'ere let's give you one of my now famous hugs.  (((((stan))))).

When Grace was born and I found out that her full name is Grace Millie, I didn't like the name Grace because there was a girl in the same class as me called Grace who wasn't a nice person.  I've got used to it now though.  The Millie part of Grace's name is after her great grandmother who is called the same but spelled Milly.

Sometimes it is quite handy.  Daughter couldn't decide on names for granddaughter and was coming up with the celeb names of this world.  We were not impressed.  The final suggestion made, I think, by OH, went down a storm as it is a nice modern name which just turns out to be the Irish equivalent of OH's Mum's name - which is old fashioned and daughter said NO WAY to.

I hated my dsughters choice of name when Saskia was born but now I can't think of her as anything else & I love it. After 2 'S' names (Scott & Saskia) she decided she would have to choose a different letter or people would think it was deliberate, so she chose Pippa (2 months before the Royal Wedding, she was not happy after that) but Pips now has an 'S' nickname, Squeaky as in Pipsqueak!

Most of the trendy boys names at the moment I think of as "old man" names. It's all the Biblical ones - Joshua, Jacob, Noah and so on. Nobody under the age of 80 was called that when I was little!

Girls names are a bit the same way, but not quite so extreme - the Getrudes haven't quite happened, but there's a lot of Millies and Avas and Bellas.

Meanwhile, I can't remember the last time I saw a littleun called Tracey or Debbie or Michelle or Wayne or Philip or Lee, which made up the majority of my classes when I was a kid.

My father , brother and Grandad all had the name Lancelot ....

Funnily enough my husbands grandfather was also called Lancelot ....but I have never come across anyone else with that name although I did come across one child called Lance....

I cannot see many people choosing that as a name for a baby nowadays ....

One of my father's cousins is a Lancelot (he's in his early 70s) but afaik it doesn't occur elsewhere in the family.  I feel fairly sure that he chose his wife because she's a Guinevere...

I know I shouldn't laugh, but ....

My mum is not Guinevere ....she is Catherine .....but strangely my hubbies grandad also was married to a Catherine ....so my children have a set of grandparents and a set of great grandparents on opposite sides of the family tree that are both called Lancelot and Catherine ....

One of ours has what is originally a French name.  When she tells French people her name, some comment on what a quaint old fashioned  French name that is

On asking what 'modern' names are popular in France, Audrey is the number one response!!!!

What's in a name??

Doing Jans family tree, we found an Alonzo, born around 1901. Seemed very odd, amongst the traditional "English" names. Asked her Mum and she said... Oh you mean Uncle Lonnie!. Odd thing was a couple of months later we were talking to someone about family trees and Alonzo, only to find they too had a rogue Alonzo from the same period.

Some names seem to fit young children , others seem odd, but as long as it's not India or Chardonnay I will go with any of them!

I prefer old names more than the made up names of today.

With names like India.... a neighbour had that name for her daughter, but the child's dad was Indian so it had some relevance.
And a friend of my daughter's, called Paris, had French parents. Why they named their next daughter Pheonix I will never know. That really did not suit her!! (especially with their complicated French/American hyphenated surname!)

I love to hear everyone's unusual name likes and dislikes. We're all different and so we all like different things 🙂

My sister in law always hated her name and changed from Deborah to Kate in her 30s!
I don't really like my name (Julie) but my OH always calls me by a pet name (unless he is annoyed with me!!) and my other names are Mum/Mummy....

Anyway, feeling a bit bad about my initial post right now. Although I can see that most of you realise it is light-hearted. Mum has been very poorly 😞
She has been neglected a bit in the hospital and luckily her sister who is a doctor was there to point out the serious complications that were occurring. The twins are absolutely fine, just hoping that Mum will be as well xxx

I print personalised items and you wouldn't believe some of the names I come across!!  Some of them are just downright unbelievable! There seems to be a real trend toward dounle barrelled names - Lily Mae (alternative spelling), Ruby Rose....that kind of thing.  Lots of people using "alternative spellings - substituting ie instead of y at the end of a name etc.  Lots of children named after pop stars or TV stars.  Personally I'm so glad my 4 children have good, solid, traditional names that gladly they are all happy with!  🙂
