Hi, yes I have a very ancient Olympus c120 which is still my favourite, and a Samsung which I don't like at all!
I love that Owl - we had a cat who looked like a cross between your owl and mine! Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Digital Zoom!

Any ideas folks, camera can do x18 optical but have to sacrifice quality for that xtra zoom!

If I were to think of a DSLR which would you say would give me the best big zoom lens without winning the lottery? Also does more zoom need steadier hand?

The more you zoom the steadier it needs to be and or higher shutter speed, in its self will factor in a more grainy picture (lower quality) I am not sure how much a big lense would cost on a dslr buts its easy to check

Went for a nice quiet walk with the family yesterday at Rufford park. I was happily enjoying taking pictures of the birds they when all of a sudden mayhem broke out. Just above the trees suddenly appeared these.
Photos not good because it happened in a split second and i didn't have camera on the right setting.

As I understand it, optical zoom doesn't lose quality but digital does.

I have 12 optical zoom and they are as sharp as my hand is steady 😄
There's no doubt when taking something small ( bird in tree ) at full optical, a tripod really is needed, but if taking something larger, find I usually get away with it handheld and on sport setting 🙂

I wouldn't want a DSLR to be honest, can get all that I want to keep me happy from my S5 :-)

Hi Steve I have a Lumix DMC FZ18 which also has a x14 optical zoom, and like you I can use maximum 8 pixies.

I asked because I'd love to be able to get 'closer-ups' of the tits and finches. The red squirrels are bolder, or at least some of them so I can get 'up close and personal'.

The yellow gladioli shows how carp digital zoom can be. BOP won't stay perched in the tree, until the fire brigade send me up on one of their ladders.

Knitting was typing while you posted last one!!

To get a better zoom than you have there on a dslr would cost mega bucks have you considered an adapter I have a 2x optical zoom add on taking mine to x24 zoom which is equivalent to a 800mm+ lens on a dslr
