Does anyone know the name of this houseplant please and any care tips?

I bought this large houseplant at the bootsale yesterday.  I thought it would go nicely in the lounge in my flat.  Sorry that the pic is round the wrong way I could not see how to turn it round!

It looks a bit spindly and needs some tlc.

It was pot bound and the soil around it all dried out.

I am hoping to make it beautiful again 🙂

Can anyone tell me the name of it please and also what type of soil might be best for it as i'd like to repot it?  Its a common houseplant I think.  Looks a bit like a palm and has 5 branches growing from the main stem.

The lounge is fairly warm with good natural light.  Its nice and big at around 6 feet tall and i'd like to give it the right care and attention if I can.

Any help on this greatly appreciated thank you!

It looks a bit like my Dragon Tree (dracaena marginata) it's leaves go like that when it needs watering :8}

It's dead easy to look after though,it copes with neglect well but should have a lot of water and an occasional spritz and likes a feed once a fortnight (again when I remember) between June and September. After this when it's dormant just keep the soil moist.

I re-potted mine in soil, peat and sand in equal measures and it's in it's final pot now of 12" I just need to freshen it when needed now on.

I've had it from a sprout for about 10 years and it's still alive and doing well....if I can keep one anyone can 😄

Thank you Patch and Twishy - much appreciated 🙂

I'm so glad that it is easy to look after!  I can't wait till it perks up a bit.  I will repot it later using that advice thank you Twishy.  Its having a good drink at the moment and is already looking a lot better than it did yesterday.  It was a nice find and just what I was looking for!

If you have a cat don't let it chew the leaves (which look like grass) - it's poisonous.

I don't have a cat but thank you - that is worth knowing for the future.

That reminded me, I used to have one of those but I also had an 'umbrella plant'  If anyone ever sees one you should get one, they're fun.  It's a tall plant, the stems I think were a couple of feet tall and the 'leaves' all come out at the top in a circle, just like an umbrella spokes.  The fun bit is, you cut off a stem and put it upside down in a bottle of water (spokes first) after a while, I think it's quite short like a couple of weeks, little roots grow out of the spokes.  When they look big enough you plant it, spokes in the soil, stalk sticking up, and you get a new plant.  Children love watching the process. 😄

What a stunning looking plant CG - I love it,  I will have to look for one of those too, the flat could do with more greenery/plants and I love the sculptural look of that.  🙂

I had an umbrella plant for years, it was stunning, I think in the end I gave it away as we were moving and it was too big.

remember cheese plants? ours grew like a forest plant!! we had to give that away too, it grew along the fireplace right across the room:^O

Yes, definitely a dracaena, I've got one in the hall.  I had to move it to a bigger pot and chose one of those tall blue earthenware ones to stop our cat climbing it. I didn't know it was poisonous - he's probably had a nibble, he's always chewing the ornamental grasses in the garden and has even tried artificial leaves!

Our plant too thrives on neglect, but remember to keep it watered when radiators are on nearby, otherwise the leaves dry and fall off.

I repotted it today and its starting to look a bit better I think.  The top stem looks a bit ropey - its not in the photo and still looks really limp and wilted.  I'm tempted to cut it off but will leave it as hopefully in a few days it will look a lot better.

Its great to know what it is and a plant that needs minimal care is ideal for me.

There is only one thing to know about the dragon plant and that is if the leaves start going dry and brown from the tips and drooping then it needs water. If the leaves droop and start to turn yellow then it is getting too much water. A 5' plant will enjoy half a pint of warm water per week with a very occasional dunk and soak in hot weather.  In cooler weather they can go for at least 3 weeks between watering.

I love to rescue them from boot sales etc. I'm up to 7 at the moment. They always look better if there is more than 1 trunk to a pot.

Another tip is that if a branch gets snapped off, stick it in a glass of water on a window sill and it will soon get roots....hey presto, another plant.

when I had mine I was told to keep it continually in water, it grew like mad!! I think I may get another one, I miss that plant. Will they grow in a window facing west, it would get a lot of sunshine in the afternoon onwards?

Okay, clever houseplant people - what should I have done with a Gerbera (which a friend kindly bought me, but it seems to be now dead) :_|

Started off very healthily, three lovely dark red blooms. Gradually, the flowers died off, but new leaves were growing, so I was hopeful. It was watered according to the instructions ~(mainly). Just went away for the weekend, came back to an extremely drooped plant, with mildew at the base. Did I overwater it in anticipation of it not getting anything for two or three days?

Lovely friends insist on buying me houseplants, but I can never keep them alive. :_|  They're too complicated

No help here I'm afraid.  I bought a gerbera (only from T*sco).  It had three flowers on, they lasted about 3 weeks I think.  They died off and I kept it inside and watered it etc.  but it never did have another flower on it.  After about two years I put it outside and let it die.:-(

You did well to keep it for two years, CG! I wonder if mine also came from that same store, as it also sported three blooms, which lasted for a similar length of time. The plant, however, lasted only another four weeks. It's outside now, in the rain, looking very forlorn, poor little thing.

If it were sunny today, it might get a new lease of life, but it's raining, so don't hold out much hope. 😐

Gerbera need a lot of natural light.. they are prone to mildew usually caused by either overwatering ( especially from the top of the plant) or the plant being repotted and the crown being under the soil. The best way to water is to stand the pot in water for a while, then stand it somewhere ( like a draining board) that the excess can drain away.

Oh, thank you, Chez - I'll try to remember that next time I have a Gerbera. I really do like them, so was sad when it withered! I think I probably did overwater it (having been a victim of underwatering with previous houseplants)!!

When you say 'natural light', do you mean a sunny spot, or a not-so-sunny spot? I'm guessing not direct sunlight heat, just gentle natural light????

natural light as opposed to electric light..sunny windowsill behind a net curtain to prevent scorching is ideal..
