Taking the Lunge
Last week ended in what has become the norm since Deno arrived, the whole family including cats and dogs, giving the horses an intense grooming Not much to report except that Deno tried to kill Miss C!!
When it was his turn to be groomed we moved Deno into the grooming area with the long grass, more accurately I should say we opened the gate in the fencing and rapidly stood to one side to avoid being trampled by a very large and clumsy beast.
As normal we tied his lead rein to a piece of baler twine wrapped around one of the trees and the grooming commenced.
whilst we were grooming Deno Mrs C was on muck collecting duty:-
When Mrs C had finished she very kindly suggested that we returned to the house for a coffee whilst Miss C finished the final touches on Deno's main and tail. The weather was once again being kind to us so it only seemed natural to drink this whilst sitting in the shade of the old apple tree.
The weather was warm and the day's chores completed there was no reason to think other than life was good when we heard a faint cry coming from the stable area. Assuming that it was just our daughter calling for something we strolled back towards the orchard.
Coming through the archway from the garden it immediately became obvious we had a problem, or more accurately Miss C had a problem!
Somehow when Miss C had finished grooming Deno and was collecting together all the bits and pieces Deno had decided to go for a little walk despite the lead rein still being attached to the tree. Of course this meant his walk was somewhat limited but that had not deterred him from carrying on which wrapped the rope firmly around the tree as well as Miss C - of course the more she had tried to stop him the more firmly wrapped the rope became.
By the time we had run over and released the rope from the head collar there was one pass of the rope around our daughter's legs and one around her chest. Thankfully apart from a few bruises she is now fine.
The previous day's excitement with Deno did not seem to put her off the following day though because she was up early and despite being Father's Day ignored me and went straight down to give Deno a light groom before putting him on a lunge for the first time.
I'm not sure how familiar he is to the idea of being lunged and unfortunately without taking him across the road, (which none of us are brave enough to do yet), to the sand school, then this had to be carried out on the mown half of the field. The temptation of fresh clover was probably a little unfair on him but eventually he did seem to grasp the principle - even if every time he was stopped he made sure he took advantage of the fresh grass.
Now for the really good news - Father's Day hadn't been forgotten - as well as a lovely lunch I was presented with a Wii - :)
"I traded in my entire collection of rare cheese to get you this petri dish"
"Oh. Well, I sold all my science equipment to get you this neat looking cheese slicer"
"Did you keep the receipt?"
