Snap I have one the same only a different colour frond it is called a Phormium it has a deep purply green leaf, It has been in the garden for 9 years and it has never flowered before.
Looks like yours is a phormium as well but I don't know the name they seem to have the same flower spike.
They are from New Zealand originally

Sorry that's huge. Well it is huge it is about 9 feet tall.

Thanks ed. This is the first time it's flowered. I'd never thought about it before but if I thought anything I probably thought it was a yukka! It was only when I saw the flowers I realised it wasn't!!

HEY!!!! thats a biggun!!!!. Lovely plant thought,, i like those sort of plants. I have a Red Star Cordyline on my balcony which looks similar,,, oooh i wonder if it will get to your plants size!!!. Your plant looks like it loves that spot its in!!.

It is a type of New Zealand flax plant - historically, the Maori people used it for clothing (making a type of linen fabric) and also for baskets and ropes.
It is a favourite home for a hooooge insect called a Weta - bleurgh - google for pics and you'll see what I mean. They grow like weeds in NZ, especially along the coast.
