Budgie ailments

Does anyone on here have any knowledge of Budgie ailments please? I had to take mine to the vet's yesterday as he has lost the feathers on his neck/chest area. He is being treated for a mite infection and had some spot-on drops applied, they last for a month. There were a few more feathers in the cage this a.m. He's still lively and talking and playing as normal. I just wondered how they get these mites or whatever they are? He isn't pulling the feathers out himself, so it's not a boredom thing with him. Never had this problem with a Budgie before. Thanks for any advice.

This is going to sound really stupid, but what do I put in his dust bath? Do I just get a saucer and put sand in it or what? I can hardly give him what the garden birds use, soil! Doesn't even mention a dustbath in my Budgie book and the internet has been of no help.

aawwww bless, he's just lovely, poor wee soul.

I suppose you could ask at the pet shop what to put in the dust bath, I wonder if fine sand would do?

Sam where are ya we need you!!

Sorry I'm late getting back to you, been a bit busy. You could ask your vet if dust bathing would be beneficial after treatment is over!. If it is then I believe you could use fine sand like the pet shop stocks for the rodents( can't remember what you call them!). At one time you could buy hook on water baths which would do the trick for a dust bath as well, no ! Don't be tempted to use anything from the garden as it could be contaminated via wild birds. Alternatively your vet may have other suggestions for your little birds future well being in the grooming department. Hope this helps& he is soon saying " who's a pretty boy" once again!

I would look for a budgie forum on the internet, these people very often know much more than vets do.

Ooooh! I remembered the name of the rodent ( Chinchilla ) & yes that's good advice from Dr who's Assistant but still run it past your Vet , although the budgie people may know more than the Vet he/ she will know if it's safe, no disrespect intended !.

Hi, Sam, thank you for your interest in little Tweet; he's no better but he's no worse just about covers how he is. I think the few tiny feathers that are coming out now (only 1 or 2 a day) are the damaged ones from before he went to the Vet's. Disappointed that I only got 1 reply from the budgie forum about mites, which didnt help really, and got no replies at all about what to put in a dustbath. He's happy enough which is the main thing and he has learnt a new phrase, "Good Boy, Tweet"  but he keeps saying a naughty word and I'm not sure if I am one or the vet! Will keep you up to date with his progress.

lol. I suspect after the indignity of having to show his tiny little naked chest off to all & sundries you are both in the firing line of his swearing, yes I think your right coupled with the fact it's probably sent him into a neck moult as well?
