My first wife went to the Doctors with pain in the legs..He give her Pain killers ..she then went back as she couldnt sleep and he give her sleeping tablets..for the last 2 months she has been in Hospital suffering from Alzheimer,s and shoulting fits and they had to Section her... My sons couldnt understand what had happened to her and told the Doctors they though the tablets were causing her illness..The Doctors took her of the tablets and now she is back to when she was before she took the tablets and dosent remember the last 2 months in Hospital.. They have found out that she is one of the ones that tablets have a side effect on.. she has got the all clear and will be home in a couple days.....I wonder how many people are in a mental home with nothing wrong with them..

How awful Tommy , but I'm glad she's on the mend, although it's really the Doctors & pharmacists job to watch out for these things, it certainly does pay to look yourself at the side effects on the leaflet enclosed in medication!.

She very lucky that my sons caught on or she would be in a home drugged to keep her quiet for the rest of her life...So please read the side effects on the bottle..

Found out that the pain was causing her to have depression...The Doctor gave her tablets for Depression and she went into Psychotic behaviour and no one caught on..

Quite a few of these strong antidepressants can cause even worse feelings for the first couple of weeks when first they start taking them, but surely they asked her Dr for her case notes Tommy?

Yes but Doctors didnt believe the tablets were to blame,,they just though she had flipped her mind.. The sons started to question the tablets and the Doctors looked into it..

Hmmm! Well if the Drs didn't think they were to blame it was good detective & persistance from your sons then that found the trouble, & your right if they hadn't persisted she might have stayed in the hospital!. Truly Scary!!.

I was prescribed pills at the end of last year to reduce inflammation, had horrible psychotic episode. Doctor will not accept that I cannot take these pills or that they caused the problem and tried to prescribe more of the same recently!!!

This is really not good news at all and I hope both your wife and you are doing ok now.

I'd say go back to your GP as soon as and get your wife referred to a specialist who deals with older aged people and the particular problems that develop for those of us who are moving on in life.

Insist up on it so she has blood tests and other tests for any side effects of those meds that may still interfere with her mental faculties.  She should not be left simply not remembering the past 2 months and any change such as she has experienced should be checked out as a matter of course, not in the least because she was not properly monitored during that time.

if there is a side effect to any medication you can bet your life I'll get it. This has me very worried....I have had terrible pain from statins, so I stopped taking them. I refuse to take them again, I don't care what the doctor says. I have enough trouble with the things that are wrong with me now, without making more trouble for myself.

That rather illustrates the difference between doctors.

I had problems with statins and my doctor worked with me firstly in an attempt to find the correct dosage by gradually reducing the dose coupled with blood tests and when that didn't work. trying a different medication regime ending with one that has been perfectly successful for a good number of years.

When things are not going right you do need to question your doctor they are not infallible, I once had a morning consultation with the nutrionist in the local hospital where I mentioned some of the latest research findings in the appropriate diet for my condition which didn't agree with her knowledge.

She did some research of her own and later in the afternoon she phoned me and we had a futher talk.

Very true! Since moving here ive just recently visited my new Dr he informs me one of the tablets I'm on has a high risk of damaging my heart, luckily for me ive not been on it long enough for it to have done that,
I'm lucky that was picked up! We don't all have the knowledge to question, but we do know our bodies ,so I agree if in doubt politely but firmly voice any concerns you have!.

Mental illness takes many forms Tommy & because of that is still not fully understood, but I think before they try & categorise it they should consider past records of the patient & medicines, they probably do but are so wrapped up in theories the truth is very often staring them in the face, I hope your ex wife continues in health, with the support of your very vigilant family!. Xxx
