Why is it things like this seem to happen so near to Christmas?

Things happen all the time, but they seem a whole lot more poignant at Christmas. I guess cos it's a time when people are supposed to be gathering together with families & friends, & not suffering
Beyond all the hype life goes on

I'm surprised that things like this don't happen more really. Its an old building. One wonders with the weight of traffic that must go past every minute of every day and the amount of use and footfall that these old buildings get are they really up to it?

You're right Wizi but it seems so sad for it to happen at this time of the year.

Jolly lucky no one was killed... It's possible there was water ingress from the roof which may have caused the damage.
I had a similar thing happen to me a few years back - on a smaller scale thank goodness.
I was restoring a Victorian house, the plasterers were replastering a section of ceiling in a corner when the central ceiling rose and the plaster around it just fell to the floor in front of our eyes. Luckily none of us was underneath but it's heavy stuff. Ceiling roses are traditionally held up - depending on their age - by a big screw or a large wooden lug into the joist above. This one had nothing attaching it to the ceiling except the plaster...
