I've an old blanket box/chest that's been in the family for generations, but I need to sell it. I dont know what it is, the photo shows it much lighter than it is.
My brother seems to think it might be worth something

The hinges are quite a modern style Streety.

It looks Art Deco or about 1930's to me but I could be wrong especially as you say it's been in your family for generations...
I would send the photos to your local auction house and ask them to date and value it. Most of them have a "free" day for valuations very week.

the hinges are originals, the stays however are not.
i went to the local dealer who had the personality of a wet weekend, and totally unhelpful.

Well 1930's is generations to me :^O about 3 of them

Looking at it I would have said 1950's but you know how long it's been in the family Streety. It's oak.

My son was left something similar to this from my mum in her will....however when she had it valued some years ago the auctioneer came round to her house because it was too heavy but hers is Jacobean and was valued at about £5,000 (at least)....so if in any doubt get a professional to quote you on it....you don't want to sell it for under it's true value. Better to pay a professional a few pounds for a quote than sell it for way under it's value.

This one isn't that old as it is machine made but an auction house should value it for free. Looks like it could be 20's 30's if the similar one is anything to go by.

Thank you for all the replies, I've trawled through listings prior to this thread and found items going between £60 to £560.. I will try and find a local auction/antique place.

You could store a load of wool & fabric in there! 😉
