Yes, the part they were working on doesn't extend fully to where I was digging, though it does cover the spot where the entranceway underground passenger subway was exactly, which is where my initial chamber was leading to, but that section was an old collapse from the looks of things.

The entrance to the chamber that I dug out, the bit above that looked really dodge before I attempted going in, that part has partially collapsed, but inside the chamber is exactly the same. So to make it safe, I'll need to remove the topsoil and brick, then plank it up and cover that in the soil.

I wonder if the pavement works had disturbed the chamber entrance causing that collapse?  Presumably they would have been using heavy machinery which would have generated quite a lot of vibration in the surrounding soil?

That too, but could also have just been caused by water losening up the soil, causing the already heavy roof to fall in on its own weight.

Though it might be a good thing, I was never comfortable with going in underneath all that rubble, it was already unnerving to dig it half the time, but if I take it all down, put planks on top of the steel supports, cover them with  soil, it'll make going inside much less concerning. Then I can even consider asking for full permission to dig a small section of the new ground where the passenger subway should be.... after I sort out the other chamber I'm digging down into first 😉

If it turns into a full formal dig, you might be able to get the likes of Tim Dunn interested...

I'll see if he'll be interested, as long as Manchester Council give me the yes. I'll even ask the Gorton MP.

Railway Heritage Association might be interested in seeing what emerges as well...?

If anything emerges!

I'm just most anxious to get into the new room, see if it goes anywhere, as I doubt a room like this would have no point of access, especially with that fire/chute feature in it! I do know this though, the ground were I was digging was becoming less compact, kinda like how it did with the first chamber I dug out properly... I only hope my calculations of where the opening was weren't off, digging sideways isn't a good idea!

Just the structure itself would be enough to interest the RHA, I should think?

Hmm, OK I'll poke the bear and see if it growls!

They'll probably react best to phrases that involve preserving the knowledge of how things were done and documenting it all.

I'm definitely after documenting it all, regardless of how long it takes me!

Have fun with all the paperwork, then! 😁

Interesting technical glitch on the boards tonight; every thread is showing the most recent post indication regrdless of which thread has actually been posted on!

Typical eBay coding! This new look has been a nightmare ever since they started messing around with things!

Since when have they ever stopped messing around with things?  That's why I stopped selling on here three years ago and got myself my own website.  I daren't name it on here, though, but I think you know what it is anyway?

Wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more 😉

Now they're forcing us to link up our bank accounts, rather than using PayPal 😠

Anyway, I'll hopefully be doing another station this weekend, and Gorton too. It's up just on the outskirts of Ashton on Ribble called Lea Road Railway Station, hopefully if all goes well, I'll be able to explore the station area wink wink!

I'll take that to mean you've found it? 🙂

The weather forecast for this weekend isn't all that good; will that be an issue for you?

Sunday was an issue, I wasn't able to go to Gorton, but I did go to Lea Road RS, along with Oxheys Railway Station and Preston Junction Station on Saturday.

Also from the sound of things, Lea Road Railway Station is going to get reinstated!

I saw your tweet about that - not seen if you've had an answer yet; I was chasing trains all day...

In terms of your excavations, the forecast for this weekend doesn't look any better at the moment does it?  ☹️

Nope, nothing! I'll see which is the council in charge of the area and ask them, if I don't get anything, I'll go back and do the stuff I didn't do when I was there, plus there's a few stations that I missed out.

Yeah, the weather is not looking good, but if the rain is light on the Sunday, I'll bite the bullet and go down anyway. Or I will go down and check on the West Timperly to Cadishead line, I think that some housing development has partially gone on to the line, I need to check and get it stopped if it is!

I think Gorton probably comes under Manchester City Council, given how wide an area they control?
