QR code verification?

I see that google are introducing a new login procedure later this year. Instrad of a code sent to your mobile it'll be a QR code instead which you'll have to scan with the camera app on your phone.

How will folks go on if they've not got a smart phone?

QR code verification?

Where have all the techie experts gone?

My reason for asking the above is that for gmail login verification, they're switching to QR codes:-

"Gmail users will soon see a big change in the way their accounts are secured and how their two-factor authenticated logins are handled. Google is planning to stop sending 2FA codes via text message to verify Gmail accounts in favor of security tools such as passkeys and QR codes that users would scan with their devices."

So, if they use a passkey, is that a PIN number and if so will gmail users be notified to create one or be given one?
