iPhone scam when selling

Hi all!

I’m sure I’ll get a lot of, you shouldn’t sell phones on eBay responses and I now know this! I wanted to just share my recent experience and to make people aware of the scam I fell for.

I sold my iPhone 13 to what looked like a legitimate buyer who asked about marks and scratches. I assured them other than some very minor cosmetic scratches and one mark on the case the phone was in excellent condition, which it was. They bought the phone and paid immediately, so far so good. The phone was sent and duly arrived no problem. As soon as the phone arrived they said it was scratched and demanded a return and full refund. The phone was returned and a full refund issued. The problem is the phone they returned is not the same one. It has deep scratches on the screen and more amazingly the mark on the case has vanished!
They did ask for the IMEI number prior to sending. I contacted eBay who have offered my half the cost of the item. So I’m out of pocket with a very damaged phone!! Just be careful if you are selling as even if you can prove they have returned a different phone you are basically stuffed!

Unfortunately what happened to you is not too unusual and not just for phones.

Although it's doubtful it would mget you any where, log this with Action Fraud.
