As long as you picked the 'not as described' option, you should be fine; the automatic system won't care how you have described the problem.
There's 2 or 3 options to choose from when opening a case ;
1. not received. (obviously not your case!)
2. not as described (choose this one....)
3. -but only in the case of private sellers- is 'damaged in post' .

I wouldn't cancel and start again... I'm not sure that's allowed!
Was it a private or business seller?
As long as you *didn't* choose 'not received' ( as that usually has tracking proof that you've got it) you should be fine...

@lucy_farmer has given you good advice.
Do not cancel the return - you won't be able to start another one.
You said the item is faulty and that is the reason you have chosen so just continue with your case.
