Need to return but packaging is damaged

I have ordered a large item (hoover) but when it arrived the packaging is all damaged. I wanted to test the hoover as it was not secure in the damaged box but I don’t have access to the industrial plug socked until I’m back at work in a week or so. I’ve decided to return as I feel the hoover isn’t right for me due to it being chucked about the back of a van.
anyway the original packaging is not sturdy or secure. I accept I have to pay return fees but do I need to supply return box and packaging materials also? Or do I bodge up the other box and send it without any bubble wrap inside like they sent me? I don’t want to lose any money or them refuse the return.

Need to return but packaging is damaged

Was the seller registered as a business or a private seller (despite appearances you will need to check the original listing)

If it was from a seller registered as "private" (even if they are legally a business) then you won't be able to return it for "change of mind" as eBay doesn't force sellers registered as "private" to accept returns for change of mind.

You would need to take legal action outside eBay to force a seller registered as "private" to accept a change of mind return
