I've just bought a car and agreed with the seller that he will deliver and I will pay on delivery later this week. I was able to speak to him as he included his phone number in the listing so we could discuss delivery costs. He wants me to pay either cash or bank transfer but I see that Ebay are asking me to pay through their system.
The listing was a normal listing, not a classified ad. and I was the only bidder.
How should I proceed?

Not sure why ebay would be prompting payment through them. You should pay cash/bank transfer but only after you've had a chance to inspect the car thoroughly.

Thanks. That's what I thought.

Hi @tom-totter ,
Thank you for your post.
The seller would of needed to list the car on a classified ad and this would have allowed the transaction to take place offsite. It looks like here the seller didn't list it as a classified ad.
Cash on collection as an option on regular listings was removed by eBay last October. Payments for those need to go through eBay which would be why payment is being asked for on the sale.
Thank you,
Kat

May I ask kat@ebay surely even cars listed in auction format that too, should only be Cash on Collection and there should be no option for a buyer to pay for a vehicle through eBay checkout by different methods, e.g. card payment / PayPal, as that is not safe for both seller and buyer.
Is the OP seeing some glitch here, by being asked to pay through eBay checkout?

What category was it listed in as motors only has cash on collection as the payment option.
Some sellers will list in the "parts" category to avoid the listing fee.

what is the item number?

Thanks. Can you tell me where I can find details of final value fees charged on a car sold by a private seller using a regular listing. My seller has no ebay experience and is unfamiliar with the payout sytem.

It was listed in correct category so all you need to do is arrange collection/delivery and pay cash/bank transfer once you have inspected and are happy with item.
If not happy ask seller to cancel purchase and walk away.
You don't have to pay through Ebay at all.

"Can you tell me where I can find details of final value fees charged on a car sold by a private seller"
That issue is nothing to do with you whatsoever.
Seller pays any fee's due.

There's no way to pay through eBay.
It was a normal listing with cash on collection.
You go fully check out the car and if you are satisfied pay and drive away.

I'm confused. When I click on Pay Now I see the only option is Cash on Collection.
Despite this on the right of the page it invites me to Pay Now.
And there's the message from kat@ebay saying that cash on collection is no longer an option on regular listings.
Not sure where I stand or what to tell the seller who is just as confused.

You cannot pay through the listing, the reminder to 'pay now' is simply because it was an auction and you won it. They are not telling you to pay through eBay.
Vehicle auctions are cash on collection, just like classified adverts.
Do not pay anything until you have thoroughly inspected the vehicle and the documents.

Thank you for your response.
However it is not compatible with the following from kat@ebay
Cash on collection as an option on regular listings was removed by eBay last October. Payments for those need to go through eBay which would be why payment is being asked for on the sale.
So who is correct?

Look on the listing, there are no payment methods on it other than cash on collection.
If there are no payment methods other than cash on the listing you can't pay through eBay, whatever Kat said.
