In the context of gold, the "K" refers to the Karat - or purity - of the gold.  White gold is an alloy of gold and at least one white metal, which is usually nickel, silver or palladium, although the properties of white gold tend to vary depending on the various metals used and their properties.  As with yellow gold, the purity of white gold is given in karats.

A gold karat is 1/24 part - 4.1667% - of the whole.  The purity of a gold alloy is expressed as the number of the parts of gold that it contains.  Therefore, an object that is 16 parts good and eight parts alloying metal is 16-karat gold, whereas pure gold is 24-karat gold.
