i bought a car off ebay in classified ad lisiting. i have emailed the seller about a problem but to no avail. can anybody help please?
You will have to continue trying to contact the seller, Brian - no-one here can help (we're just ordinary ebayers), and neither can Ebay as there is no buyer protection on vehicles.
You obviously know where he lives, as you would have collected the car from there. But you generally only have legal recourse on used vehicles if the seller is a trader. If he's a private individual, it's up to you to fully examine and test the vehicle, and do all necessary checks, before you hand over your hard-earned cash. The law says 'caveat emptor' - buyer beware.
If he is a trader, he's unlikely to respond at this time as he won't be open for business due to the pandemic restrictions. But in the meantime, you can of course go to the CAB's website for information and assistance.
Yes, I get that you bought the vehicle. But did you buy from a trader or from a private individual. As I've already said, the law can only help you if the seller is a UK trader. A used vehicle sold by a private individual is not covered by consumer law. If the seller IS a UK trader, go to the CAB's website to learn what to do, as I advised above.
