how does bidding actually work

How does bidding work? Which is the last bid accepted?

Thank you!

Surprised you have to ask after being a member for 10 years and having made hundreds of purchases. Highest bid when auction ends wins, no matter when it was placed, no mystery to it.

You have been on ebay as a buyer and seller for 11 years, however can you have gone that long without understanding how bidding works?

you can place a bid at any time during the life of the listing,

bids are accepted right up to the moment the listing closes as long as they are at least one increment higher than the bid showing on the listing

ebay has an auto bidding system where you place your maximum bid, the absolute maximum, not the 'I might bid higher' maximum

the auto bid system then bids for you until you either win the item or are outbid

the highest bid will win the item, which isn't always the last bid placed
