Paid by cash and money taken by Paypal next day

I am not sure how this happened but I bought an item which was cash on collection. I collected it and paid in cash. The next day I left positve feedback. I checked my bank account toady and found that the same amoutn had been taken from my Paypal. I am not sure how this happened. I have contacted the seller who said they are not good with IT and that they woudl look into it but I haven;t heard anything else. What shoudl I do next if they do not get back to me? Has my Paypal been hacked or is this something that sometimes happens?

Sellers can't help themselves to your money, obviously, and neither can Ebay. The payment was made because you - or someone else with access to your Ebay account - went through Ebay checkout. There is no other explanation for the PayPal payment for this transaction, so you will have to accept that.

The seller can obviously refund your PayPal payment from the PayPal transaction, but he can't get back the PayPal fees he was charged. PayPal do not refund them. So the best bet is for him to either return your cash, or to send you a PayPal 'gift' payment so that you don't incur any fees for receiving the payment. Or he could do it via bank transfer - just send him your bank account number and sort code if that suits you both.

If the seller fails to refund the duplicate payment, you can always go down the legal route, but you would need to be able to prove that you made a cash payment, which would likely be difficult if not impossible.

The only way I can think of is that you completed the ebay checkout process. 

As the seller would have had to list PayPal as a payment method it would automatically trigger the payment to your seller. 

Just ask your seller to log into PayPal, select the transaction, insert the amount and press refund.

Have you not got the sellers phone number ?.If so why not ring them and ask them if they have the payment in their pp acc ?.

If not then they must at least know how to check and email you the result.They should then refund.

In nearly 17 years i have never heard of this happening as any paypal payment is made by the buyer.

Has anyone else got access to your ebay acc ?.
