Hi
I understand there are new (confusing) tax laws regarding purchases from outside the UK.
But I have just bought a furniture item listed as Manchester seller....
And been charged tax?
I briefly remember as I was paying the invoice stated price then tax but it added up to £79.99 advertised so I took no notice.
Now on double checking I see £15.99 has been added on top of price??
Contacted seller who tells me he imports from china but supplies from manchester warehouse where it must have come from as came in couple days???
How the flip would I know that and is this right. Is no mention whatsoever in ad.....and how do you know if you choose and think you buying a UK item?
Am confused .
Thanks for any info
Just to clarify one one point.
A business seller who states the items are in a UK warehouse is one thing.
But if that business seller is registered outside of the UK,for example China, then the UK buyer will be charged 20% VAT when they pay at the checkout.
But there seems to be a major problem at the moment where both the buyer and the seller and the item are all within the UK and 20% VAT is been added on.
eBay have had a month to resolve this problem but very little seems to be happening.
And what is confusing matters is the eBay statement that all listings on eBay UK INCLUDE VAT.
Others are also being caught with Brexit VAT changes since 1st. January ... this link may explain ... see >
1. 'Goods in the UK at the point of sale - sold by an overseas seller through an online marketplace'
2. 'Goods located outside the UK at point of sale'

A lot of Chinese Sellers make out they are Based in the UK when they are really shipping from China. Is against the Item Location Policy you can Report them to Ebay for Misrepresentation. If the Delivery Estimate is anymore than a week it isn't being Shipped from the UK. Check their Business Address on the Listing to see where they are really based. You shouldn't have been Charged Import VAT if the Location under Postage says UK. I would complain to Ebay. Use the Policies Link at the very foot of the Page and Scroll down as far as you can to find the Phone Link to Ring Ebay.
The addition charge is V.A.T, applicable to relevant listings.
i don`t know if there is an issue with some listings etc, but any item i`ve bought since the charge came into effect, had the charge clearly shown on the listing, before i bought it.
i`ll stand corrected on this issue, but my guess would be that the fact they are shown has based in China doesn`t make any diiference, because the seller has the item and ships from the U.K, therefore is under U.K law.
