I had to open a case due to the trainers I bought were not brand new, they had been worn and they had left dirty socks inside each trainer. I took pictures of the trainers including the socks and ebay sided with the seller. Is there anything else I can do via ebay before I have open a case with PayPal

as you say you opened a change of mind case - obviously the private seller refused to accept the return.
The neg you left is still there as is the false positive the seller left you.
