A new feature has recently appeared on search category pages which I think is a great idea from eBay, If a sellers unsold item is re-offered it now shows as a 'Relisted' item, not only does this save a lot of wasted time looking at every new listing and then realising it has been offered before but you can immediately see anything that's a first time listing. It isn't on all search categories yet but hopefully it will be introduced throughout soon. On the pages where it is working now it shows just how much stuff is relisted. Hats off to eBay for a great idea.
In theory it might sound like a good idea, but it's not totally foolproof. All a seller would have to do would be to take a fresh set of photos of the item, write up a new item description so as to ensure that it read differently from the original listing whilst at the same time remaining accurate in terms of the information provided, then the seller could just relist the item again. Therefore if a seller were to do that the item would appear as a brand new listing in the search results, even though the item has previously been advertised for sale.
As m25jet says, even simpler relist by using List Similar.
Does it really matter as far as sellers are concerned there are always new people searching and as far as buyers are concerned it is what is new to them that matters.
Possibly even altering the price would mean it is new.
It is not in ebay's interest to stop members looking at all listings, if everyone never bought a relisted item then ebay could close up shop.
