Don't worry, AI is going to save us!

Just spotted this AI howler.

And I'll say it again - we have fallen for this AI hype so much, we are as good as doomed. If AI can't even get it right when it has the EAN number of a product right in front of it's digital face, what hope is there it will give you a fair chance at a job application, get your tax right, make sure you are on the right medications etc...?

The "Take Me Home" DVD is a British drama mini-series from 1989 directed by Jane Howell and produced by David Snodin. Starring actors Keith Barron, Reece Dinsdale, and others, the mini-series follows the story of a young boy with a brain transplant who is taken home by his new mother. With a run time of 177 minutes and a 4:3 aspect ratio, this PAL format DVD is a standard edition released by the BBC. The film is in English and has a certificate rating of 15. A compelling and heartwarming story set in Telford, this mini-series is a must-watch for fans of British dramas.

The story of a young boy with a brain transplant!? Not in the version I saw 😂.

And its not set in Telford, it's set in a named fictional town that I can't rememember, its FILMED in Telford.

I'm also not convinced the abortion scene, Thatcherite yuppie background to the story or, basically the affair which rips the main characters apart could ever be described as 'heart-warming' but each to their own. Definitely not one for Auntie Mabel.

There is no hope for us.

If that is actually from a listing, then it's quite clear that the seller has not checked it.

AI is a tool to help, not a replacement for thinking.

And just because it has the EAN number, does not mean that it has access to any database with that information in it.

Do you imagine that the many who believe AI is going to save them £££s in manpower will be doing any thinking?

It obviously has access to something, as some of that information is not in the title but is correct. It's where it forks the danger lies. A quick 'sanity check' of the first few lines wouldn't trouble most human eyes. This is not about a DVD listing though, it's about the unregulated black hole we are about to jump into.

'.........it's about the unregulated black hole we are about to jump into.'

I find myself worrying about the proliferation of AI /chatGPT type things in all aspects of life :

AI/chat feeds upon the contents of the internet.

As it is used more and more, the internet's contents become increasingly written by AI/chat...... including all the dross and 'hallucinations'.

Which it carries on feeding off....... and so on, into an enormous 'feedback loop' .

Eventually there will be complete boll**ks popping up in everything AI/chat produces.

And the vast majority of people will believe it...

A sensible concern unless (and I'm not saying this would be completely the answer) anything generated by AI is forced to be marked at a deep and indelible level as such. Although very hard to enforce and incredibly easy for er, AI tools, to virtual-screen-cap it off and present it as non-AI!!

IT has always been miles ahead of regulation etc.  It does however catch up over time.

AI, is a misnomer anyway, it's not even slightly intelligent.  It's just a mash-up of lots of information put out in a manner that is legible.  If it's starts thinking for itself, then it may well become a problem.

Otherwise however, it's GIGO and if people are using it, then they need to be aware of that and check things properly.  And of course one of the issues, is that it's picking up information from all sorts of databases available online, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the information it picks up is actually correct.

Those that use it or plan to, in order to save manpower etc, have to think very carefully about it before implementing it.  If they don't, it could destroy their business.  So it is most certainly not as black and white as you seem to think.

If they use the tool correctly, then of course it will save time etc.  In just the same way that robot's in factories are replacing people.  It is the way of the world, progress I'm afraid, won't be stopped.

And I'm not pro AI at all, quite the opposite.

The thing is that AI specifically the current LLM does indeed have it's genuine uses. I forgot most of my coding skills I learned back in the 1990's.

AI has allowed me to use what I do remember in conjunction with modern coding techniques to create tools that allow me to do my job a lot quicker and more efficiently than I could even 10 years ago.

The cost of a professional developer would have made the savings uneconomical. Likewise me relearning and updating my knowledge would have moved the payback time out into the years not weeks and months that AI allowed me to do.

What didn't happen is me telling ChatGPT what I wanted and it spewing out flawless code on the first try. I still had to write some of it myself and properly understand what I wanted to do.

It was quite good at finding solutions to the bugs but was useless at finding the bugs in the first place.

With a strong caveat that as  @therenewalworkshopltd says. This is nowhere near being actual intelligence. It's more being able to guess what you need from the enormous amounts of data is has sifted through on the internet.
