Would it not be possible for ebay to request sellers to include "country of manufacture" in the item description to aid buyers who do not wish to support a particular countries produce?

It's available as a specific in Jewellery categories.

Also in clothing

But is there anything in place that ensures what the seller states is really how it is....

You mean is it actively policed?
Not that I'm conscious of. When I've purchased items from Dublin, UK (ha,ha) and they''ve been delivered with a customs label from China, eBay have swiftly removed the reported item(s)/ listings.
To an extent policing of the platform is by platform users.

It is an IS 'Item Specific' in most categories but it isn't compulsory. I'm not even sure it's a recommended IS.
I do try to avoid Chinese manufactured goods on an ethical basis but of course every IS can be manipulated and unscrupulous sellers will always find a way around ANY measures designed to filter them out.

I'd imagine that if a seller states something in specifics that is not correct and if the buyer is bothered by it , then they could claim the item is not as described. It's the most likely way that specifics are policed.

Not sure what you are asking me!
My post was in answer to the OP. Just to let them know that it is already possible for sellers to include the 'Country of Manufacture' in their listings but many sellers simply don't.
I thought that I was being helpful... Obviously not.
